About This Listing

Extremely rare 1920's Lyon & Healy "Shrine" Mandolin. This design is very special to come out of Chicago's Lyon & Healy factory. The same unique futuristic sweeping body design was applied to a number of different instruments sold under the Washburn brand including guitars, ukuleles and mandolins. The Shrine ukulele was the only one produced in any quantity but is fairly rare. The Shrine mandolins are extremely rare because of the limited production. It was produced for 1 year only (1927) and this is the first and the only one I have seen. The instrument's features include a nicely grained solid spruce top and really beautiful solid mahogany back and sides, and pointed ends on the headstock. A floating bridge and a very unusual green celluloid binding. This rare instrument is playing very good with a low action. Concerning its age it is very well preserved.

The Shrine mandolin was introduced by Lyon & Healy, in 1927 and it is unknown why this triangular model was called the Shrine. The original catalog description says the Shrine was “scientifically designed in every respect”. If you look at the combination of the triangle body and the triangle soundhole both with a clear green binding, it really is a remarkable design feature and a musical heritage from Chicago. The Lyon & Healy Shrine mandolin was a quality product. They are flattops and very nicely made for what they are, with the same quality and balanced sound as Martin mandolins. There are 7 cracks in the solid top but these are stable and don't move. One tuner is bend but all tuners work excellent, frets and the intonation are excellent. The mandolin plays and sounds very good with a fine action. The sound is extremely well balanced, crispy and loud, it compares to the sound of a Martin. It does sound very nice. Dimensions: 60 x 27,5 x 7 cm. Body length: 27,5 cm. Comes in a new hard case. Offers Welcome!
