About This Listing

Up for sale, a 1978 Martin D-28 dreadnought acoustic guitar in 100% original, collector-grade condition, complete with the original molded hardshell case. Featuring solid East Indian rosewood back and sides and a solid Sitka spruce top that has been worked-in to perfection, this D-28 has a classic Martin dreadnought tonal profile.

The guitar offers a deep, resonant, textured tone with more treble detail and immediacy than is often attributed to a ‘70s Martin dreadnought. Emblematic of Martin’s piano-like clarity and string-to-string balance, each string and register is present and even-sounding. And of course there’s plenty of boom and kick on the wound strings, with a high volume ceiling and prodigious projection. The guitar weighs 4lbs 12oz, freshly restrung with 12-54 bronze strings and professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action.

The mahogany neck splits the difference between a very soft V and a proper U shape, with plenty of substance and a particularly hearty feel in the higher registers, measuring .875" deep at the 1st fret and .995" at the 9th. The bound ebony fretboard has lightly rolled edges, retaining the original practically perfect slender fretwire which has its full factory height and well-rounded crowns, showing just a touch of wear beneath the B and High E strings on the crowns of frets 1-3. The guitar plays cleanly in every register, and the neck is straight. With 14 frets clear of the body, this D-28 has Martin's traditional 25.4" scale length, and the nut measures 1 11/16" in width. On the headstock face, the flawless gold Martin logo is present on the rosewood veneer, and the original Grover Rotomatic chrome tuning machines are intact and turn smoothly.

On the body, the ebony bridge is fitted with the original saddle, and the neck set is original as well. While the saddle has minimal room for future adjustment, the guitar is setup well within spec, with action measuring 7/64" on the bass side at the 12th fret and 5/64" on the treble side. The original bridge plate is intact, and all braces are properly secured. The pickguard is original, and the requisite small "B string crack" between the pickguard edge and bridge has been professionally addressed. Beyond that, the guitar is crack-free. Cosmetic wear is otherwise extremely limited, with a few small dings and scuffs on top, primarily on the lower bout, along with faint lacquer checking across the spruce and a touch of pick scuffing across the soundhole. The back and sides are exceedingly well-kept.

The original molded black Martin hardshell case is included.
