This is a 1979 serialized Fender Stratocaster but final assembly was in 1980. It’s a great playing guitar that’s had some modifications in its 43 years of life I’ll describe best I can. It has just been cleaned and is playing great with brand new D’addrio 10’s on it. The neck , neckplate , body , bridge , tuning machines, , neck/middle pickups, tone pots and finish are all original to the guitar. The bridge pickup was changed to a Bill Lawrence Humbucker and the volume pot was changed, I’m unsure if the pickguard is original and modified for the humbucker or if it’s been replaced. This guitar has great action, very low and plays great. The neck and original finish, headstock front is clean and the logo has no damage at all. The neck is extremely clean condition wise as are the frets. The rear of the neck is very clean and in fantastic shape , something I’m particular about. The frets essentially look new, I don’t think the guitar was used much and as said the guitar currently has pretty low action and plays nicely. It is a nice full neck, plenty of depth to it( chunky) and yet remains comfortable. The body is again original with its original finish. The body finish looks as unplayed as the neck finish - again very clean. It shows only the slightest scratches and small dings - no chips. It was just given a good cleaning with GHS guitar polish and looks great. As you may know 70s strats are factory routed for single coils SSS only , so a humbucker wouldn’t fit stock. The body was routed - it appears only the most minimal routing was done to fit the humbucker so not much wood was removed. I opened it up to show this and since the guitar was apart I took unobstructed photos of the internals. You can see the routing to widen the bridge pickup area , no other routing has occurred. The neck pocket has some stickers one of which matches the headstock serial number. The body also has a sticker under the middle pickup that says 10-27-80 presumably the date of final assembly. The neck heel has an employee name and various stamps. The bridge pickup is a Bill Lawerence USA L-500XL, on reverb this exact model of pickup is listed a few times at $200+. It’s a great sounding pickup and personally I’m glad it was modified with a humbucker as I prefer HSS Strats but obviously this could be returned to SSS with a new pickguard and a single coil pickup if that’s the new owners desire. The neck and middle pickups are original Fender with code 016730, these pickups were used from the early 1980s for many decades in USA fenders. The electronics as described earlier do have some modifications. The volume pot has been changed, it appears to have been changed to some type of boost volume pot as it goes to a battery connection. Their is a mini toggle switch which has some effect on the bridge position when switched. The volume when switched drops dramatically, i believe that’s because it should be activating a volume boost but their is no longer a 9 volt battery hooked up. When I bought the guitar I was told it was A series parallel switch but when I opened the guitar up I saw a battery connection but no battery, it appears the very end of the battery connection is missing it’s little snap on connections where you’d push it onto a 9 volt battery. Someone could replace this connector and put a 9 volt battery on it and I’m assuming it would work but i had planned to eventually go back to a normal volume pot and never got around to fixing it. The volume pot works fine as a regular volume knob as is. The humbucker works fine as well, just as i said when the switch is flipped the vomune drops dramatically as what it was wired for requires a 9 volt battery that’s not hooked up. No routing was done to accommodate the battery it would just sit in the cavity. The guitar still has a 5 way switch , volume and 2 tone pots. The bridge pickup is also wired for tone. I believe both tone pots are original, on one I can see the entire code 1378020, on the other I can see part of these numbers and what I can see matches - these date to the 20th week of 1980. All pots , 5 way switch etc are working. While the guitar was apart some electronic spray was used to keep the electronics functioning well. It was also cleaned and polished. All the chrome on this guitar, bridge, neckplate , tuners, is all very clean and vibrant besides some minor pitting to the neckplate. I’ve never used the tremolo on the guitar but it is included as well as a bridge cover - again I was told by a prior owner these are original to the guitar and they appear so, the bridge cover has some stamps on the underside like the original fender ones did. These are both located in the internal pocket of the hard case. The case is the original and I believe from the first year of the hard plastic Fender case. These are very solid cases and this one has survived in excellent condition even the inside is nice. The outside has no cracks or breaks to it. Hard to find these still intact but here it is. This guitar is a tank with this big maple neck and ash body. It weighs in at just over 10 pounds.
