Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a rare 1950's era Electro Voice 655 Dynamic microphone with a high impedance setting that was sold as a quality studio model. This unique microphone was a high end, lite weight mic with a rugged construction designed to give the user a bit of length to work with as most mics of that time did not have an extended length. This model was only made for about 10 years. The signal on this 655 sounds like new...strong and clear!
Pic # 2 is from an old E.V catalog showing the mic and it's characteristics. You'll notice the 655 seen in that advertisement was the 1st generation model with the more aggressive looking front tip. That model was phased out quickly being given the more practical (and probably safer) front mesh grill. I'm imagine the first gen 655 was responsible for a chipped tooth at some point in time.
The 655 was eventually cancelled and replaced by the 655C model which had the adjustable impedance in the high, medium and low setting. The 655C model also no longer had the built in joint mechanism and utilized a more modern type mic clip so that the mic could be quickly removed from the mic stand.
You don't see too many of these mics around and they were quite expensive when sold back in the day. It comes with the short attached cable that utilized the male Cannon UA-3-11 connector. Another short Cannon female UA-311 to male Switchcraft XLR cable is included so that you can use any XLR cable as an extension to operate this microphone. Both cables are in excellent physical and operating condition. Just a small crack on the rubber boot of the mic's cable. One of the most collectable E.V mics of all time and they continue to rise in value. The short cable provided is an easy $80.00 item as these cables are hard to come by.
Again, the mic is set at high impedance being void of any bass and would be ideal for a "rockabilly" tone or any HAM radio you have. Some musicians like that old school sound when recording or singing.
The 655 is appx 12 inches long X 1 inch wide.
This microphone has a stock painted tube that shows a bit of typical wear as you can see in the pics provided. Some small paint loss, scratches and a few lite scuff marks but zero dents or fractures. Nothing loose or missing. Still a pretty nice looking mic overall. Electro Voice painted these mics as the all chrome bodies were not ideal for live T.V or televised events with the extreme glare the chrome would put off. The lower joint mechanism allows for a wide degree of tilt in any direction and it's tightened via side screw with plenty of tension. There is an RCA / Atlas AD-1 stand adapter screwed onto the bottom of the lower pistol grip / joint mechanism. That item alone is a $40.00 piece. The mesh screen looks good as well with zero dents, odors or tarnish. This 655 is an easy 7 on a scale of 1 - 10.
One of the most collectable E.V mics of all time and they continue to rise in value.
The mic comes with a gorgeous case made of painted metal made by Smith / Victor that was made in the USA. It's perfect for this 655 being slim, lite weight, sturdy and really compliments the mics as it's a mid century design and build.
The case is appx 15 inches wide X 7 1/2 inches deep X 2 inches tall and comes with a carrying handle and locking latch to keep the lid firmly closed. The case has two new foam pads to keep the contents safe and snug. Plenty of room inside for cables as well.
A very cool package deal all around.
