About This Listing

This is a no-reserve auction for one Electro-Voice PL20 dynamic microphone owned by Steve Albini.

This specific microphone was used by Albini during the tracking sessions for Nirvana’s In Utero as one of three vocal microphones for Kurt Cobain’s vocal tracks.

Starting bid begins at a conservative estimated market value (without considering the historical significance) of $350.

This microphone has been authenticated as the PL20 used in the session by Steve Albini using a photo taken by Bob Weston at the session (see video below listing description), and comes with a watermarked certificate of authenticity with make, model, serial number, and Steve Albini's signature.

As this microphone has been a part of Albini’s microphone collection at Electrical Audio, we can assume this microphone has been on more recordings than just In Utero.

Setting aside the historical significance of this microphone, the PL20 is almost exactly the same as the more readily available Electro-Voice RE20 save a darker gray casing.  Its wide frequency response and lack of over-hyped proximity effect when used in close-micing applications has made it a favorite of engineers and players alike— you can regularly see the RE20/PL20 in the hands of Stevie Wonder, Thom Yorke, and many others.

This PL20 is in full working order and ships fully insured via UPS Next Day Air.
