About This Listing

When is a Goya not a Goya? When it's a Galanti!

The 1967 Goya Panther S2 made in Italy by Galanti.

Wow, is this thing cool or what? As far as I know the Galantis sold under other brands are relatively rare. Made in 1967 for the Goya brand, probably as a subcontract to Zerosette and called "Panther". Pretty much identical to the Galanti Grand Prix...

This thing is in great condition and plays as good as it looks. Action is low and the electronics work perfectly. It’s made from solid mahogany and sports a lot of typically European appointments, including nice Van Ghent tuners. This thing is all original including the trem arm! The condition is very good with a few dings and lacquer checking. Hey, it's 55 years old!

And now a little history…

The Galanti Company had been making high-quality accordions since around 1900 and was successfully exporting them for sale in the USA. In the 1920s the accordion was an exotic, expensive vaudeville instrument but it soon became a mass-market product with the peak of its popularity in the 1950s, exemplified by Lawrence Welk and Dick Contino.

But then came the Beatles… they almost single-handedly ignited the frenzied guitar craze of the 1960’s. Bye bye accordion…

So… in Italy, several accordion manufacturers jumped into the guitar boom with highly designed, european-styled guitar models. But this Galanti made Panther is without a doubt the best of the bunch. Head and shoulders above the rest.

’65 was the high-water mark for electric guitar demand, and Galanti was attempting to ride the wave. But demand in the late ’60s began to slow and these guitars went the way of the dinosaur. Nonetheless, Italian designers created some of the coolest, most playable guitars outside of the U.S.

As far as I know this two-pickup version was listed as the Goya Panther S2 (they also made a three pickup version, the Panther S3).

The craftsmanship is outstanding, however, the wild push-button switches take some getting used to unless in your past musical life you happened to be Frank Yankovic. The Galanti Grand Prix has a solid wood body, adjustable truss rod and a real sweet Galanti patented vibrato unit. It also sports a rosewood fretboard! This Italian-made guitar was designed from the ground up, with most parts engineered and produced in house. The pickups are actually mini-humbuckers, and are extremely hot, with a very aggressive high end. There are 4 switching options: O is for off, M is for all pickups on and the other two push buttons are for each pickup individually. However, only one accordion button can be pushed down at a time. I really dig the O position…

This guitar ships in the original hard shell case. The latches work but the one on the right is a little finicky.

Check out the picks, they tell the whole story.
