Unfortunately I have to let go of
my beloved TEUFFEL tesla MIDI in „fire“ – the guitar was built for me by German
Master Luthier Ulrich Teuffel and is in excellent condition – Ulrich’s very own
finish has changed texture here and there and there is a small dent on the
upper body half, but otherwise the guitar is like new! The master himself
checked the guitar’s electronics, pickups and checked the frets etc. (I enclose
the original receipt of purchase). The guitar comes in its original case with
the tool (with which you can do pretty much every „operation“ on the guitar).
Ulrich Teuffel makes almost
everything himself (except for the bridge and the Megaswitch) – so the pickus
(SSH) are his own creation as is every other part of the guitar. A Schaller
Megaswitch controls the sounds. The switching positions are: bridge, bridge +
middle, bridge + neck, middle + neck, neck. And the guitar sounds beyond
awesome – trust me!
The tesla
„has a through-neck made of old
bird's eye maple. In the zone where it crosses the body, the neck has two alder
cap strips. Both body sides are made of American alder. The hardware is bolted
on with hand polished stainless steel hex screws which lead into metal thread
inserts. These bushings are exactly cut and glued into the guitar body.
At the 7th fret the neck passes
into the body. This makes the neck quite "short" and stiff. Low
frequency resonances are supported by this construction. The transition of the
neck into the body is in the shape of a groove which allows comfortable access
to the higher frets.
The fingerboard is sealed on the
top to keep the wood from getting dirty. The back of the neck is sealed while
keeping the pores open. This gives the neck a natural feel.
The 2-way-truss
rod from hardened stainless steel. Its weight is 48 grams (1.7 oz).
Just 1.7 oz! All tesla models have this truss rod.
Each fret edge is rounded off
and polished by hand. The fret slots end just before the neck edge so the frets
can't stick out and affect playability during dry times in the winter.
The fret markers are two-tone:
outside there is a black circle for visibility under bright conditions. Inside
I have included phosphorescent minerals to let the dots glow on a dark stage.
At the top end of the neck is a
steel locking nut which locks each string seperately. The locking screws are
made of extra durable stainless steel. I get them from a precision turning
shop. For the price of six screws you could buy a whole Les Paul copy from
China ex works. The ends of the string can be pressed into the little cavities
behind the screws, so the string ends can't hurt you. The nut is height
adjustable with little screws after fret dressing. The edge of the nut is
adjusted to assure harmonic intonation.“
Here’s what Mr Teuffel says about
the „MIDI“ capacities of this exceptional instrument:
„Like the birdfish, the concept of
the tesla midi is the complete separation of both signals: midi to converter
and magnetic pickups to amplifier. Therefore the pure tesla tone is not
affected by the midi converter. Only via the 13 pin jack the acoustic sound of
the piezo bridge can be transduced. The magnetic pickups and the magnetic
control circuit is connected to the 1/4" jack only. This is very important
for high-gain sounds.
Magnetic pickups and midi sounds
remain separated. Therefore the guitar has two jacks: one 1/4" jack for the
analog signal and a Roland 13 pin jack for the midi signal and the
piezo-signal. The jack mounting plate is cut from a solid 8 mm (0.32 inches)
aluminum plate.
The foundation of the MIDI guitar
is a Tune-o-matic bridge in conjunction with RMC piezo saddles and a MIDI
controller. On the bridge there is a string rest made of ebony. It optimizes
the string pressure on the piezo crystals and prevents string-to-string
crosstalk by dampening the strings between the tuners and the bridge. This
enables faster tracking.
The tesla midi can be controlled by
a volume knob and a tone knob for the magnetic pickups, a volume knob for the
Synthesizer and a volume knob for the acoustic sound.
Beneath the pickups there are two
push-button switches which control the channel selection of the MIDI converter
(up – down).“
The case:
„The case shell is made from a
lightweight but heavy-duty plastic sandwich material. This makes the case very
light, yet robust. The shell's edges are welded and reinforced with anodized
aluminum edges. All of the fittings are chrome plated. Top and bottom shells
are joined with three hinges.
nside the case there is a foam
cushion which is cnc cut with a high-pressure water beam. Off to the side of
the guitar there are two additional compartments for the strap, strings and
tools.“
All in all a highly professional
and great-sounding instrument for every style of music.
