About This Listing

Rickenbacker was founded in 1931 by Adolph Rickenbacker, a Swiss-American businessman and engineer. Adolph Rickenbacker was passionate about music and already had experience in the music industry through his previous company, the Rickenbacker International Corporation, which produced stringed musical instruments.

In the early days, Rickenbacker concentrated mainly on the manufacture of resonator guitars, a type of guitar that uses a metal cone to amplify sound. These were very popular with musicians of the time, particularly in blues and country music styles.

And it was in the 1950s that Rickenbacker began to turn its attention to the manufacture of electric guitars. The brand enjoyed great success with the "Combo" model, a solid-body guitar with distinctive curved shapes. Rickenbacker electric guitars soon made a name for themselves with their unique sound and elegant aesthetics.

In 1957, Rickenbacker entered into a partnership with the British company Rose Morris. Rose Morris was a major distributor of musical instruments in the UK. This partnership enabled Rickenbacker to expand its presence in the British market. Rickenbacker guitars were distributed by Rose Morris in the UK under the brand name "Rose Morris Rickenbacker" or "RM Rickenbacker".

This partnership with Rose Morris also contributed to the growth of the Rickenbacker brand in the 1960s. The Beatles, among others, played a major role in the popularization of Rickenbacker guitars. George Harrison used a Rickenbacker 360/12 guitar during the recording of the song "A Hard Day's Night" in particular, which sparked considerable interest in the brand's instruments.

After the partnership with Rose Morris came to an end, Rickenbacker continued to develop as an independent brand. Rickenbacker guitars became iconic, particularly in the rock and folk-rock of the 1960s and 1970s. Artists such as Tom Petty, Pete Townshend and Roger McGuinn helped keep the brand's instruments in the spotlight.

Today, Rickenbacker continues to build high-quality electric guitars, renowned for their distinctive sound and retro aesthetic. Classic models are still highly sought-after by musicians and collectors alike.

The partnership with Rose Morris was a milestone in the history of the Rickenbacker brand. It helped extend the brand's reach in the UK, and introduced many British musicians to Rickenbacker guitars. In particular, it led to the discovery and popularization of Rickenbacker in Europe.

For sale here is a 335 Rose Morris 1997 model in Fireglo finish, dating from April 1967.

A model that bears witness to the rock era of the 1960s, of course, of which this model was only produced between 1964 and 1969, but also to the development of the Rickenbacker brand to the notoriety it still enjoys today.
