About This Listing

The G&L L-2000 is in our mind G&L's signature bass, with a broad range of options that are consistently useful and musical. With both active and passive modes, and with their wide-ranging MFD pickups it's perfect for session musicians, live performers, and those who desire a professional level bass that can cover any style or genre of music.

This is a 2021 left-handed fretless B-stock custom build, with a small finish chip (last photo). Build sheet says Ebony fretboard when it is in fact very dark Rosewood. This bass guitar has never been previously sold.

This USA-made G&L L-2000 Bass features:

  • Swamp Ash body, Blonde, 9.2 pounds
  • G&L 'Medium C' (1-1/2" width at the nut), 9.5" radius
  • Gloss finish quarter-sawn maple neck
  • Indian Rosewood fretless fretboard with ghost lines
  • (2) G&L Magnetic Field Design (MFD) Humbucker pickups
  • Volume, Treble and Bass controls
  • Passive, Active, or Active with upper EQ boost, activated by lower mini-toggle
  • Series/Parallel/Single coil pickup mode (single coil mod middle mini toggle)
  • Three position pickup selector (upper toggle)
  • Hefty patented Saddle Lock Bridge (a locking saddle screw clamps the saddles together for better sustain)
  • Lightweight Aluminum tuning pegs for better instrument balance
  • Deluxe hardshell tolex case

This L-2000 has an optional Swamp Ash body instead of the standard Alder. Compared to the more mid-focused Alder, we like the enhanced clarity and sweet top end that you get with Swamp Ash. It's our wood of choice with the MFD pickups, plus the choice of Blonde on a bass guitar is a nice change of pace.

This guitar has what looks like a complex control format, but it only takes a moment to become familiar with their functions. From top to bottom the knobs are Volume, Treble and Bass. In either active or passive mode they work much like G&L's passive treble and bass controls on their Legacy guitar series.

First there is the top toggle, which is a three-way switch that works exactly like a three-way pickup selector on an electric guitar (neck, both, bridge). The middle toggle puts the pickups in series, single coil or parallel mode. Parallel has a leaner, brighter tone, while the series mode adds a more pronounced midrange fullness. We use single coil most of the time, which has a little more output and punch than the parallel mode. Players who slap or like a springy piano-like tone will like the parallel or single coil mode; while the series mode is fatter with a more wooly and warm tone. Lastly, the bottom toggle controls whether the guitar is passive, active, or active mode with a treble boost.

The tonal difference between active and passive is not dramatic, but active mode is a little crisper with a slightly sharper attack and more responsive tone controls. It's also not dramatically louder either, and you might only need passive mode if your battery goes dead or if you play an amp with very limited headroom.

With all this tone shaping capability, the L-2000 is capable of anything from bright slap bass, to warm jazz, fat growling low end, or trashy punk. With broad dynamic range and excellent overall sustain, it's really just a matter of a little experimentation to dial in the guitar to suit your style or particular gig.

The G&L L-2000 is immensely flexible instrument, that blends a powerful but easy-to-use control format along along with G&L's top notch materials, hardware, fit and finish. The L-2000 is perfect for session musicians, live performers, and those who desire a professional level bass that can cover any style or genre of music.
