Gibson LG-1 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1950), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 5430-32, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, black hard shell case. This Gibson LG-1 was Gibson's budget flat top in the early 1950's, essentially the same as the LG-2 but with simpler ladder-bracing under the top instead of the more elaborate X-pattern. The materials and cosmetics are exactly the same, the only way to tell the difference is to peer into the back edge of the soundhole! The sound is usually somewhat brighter and less sophisticated, with something like a mix of Gibson and Stella characteristics. This is a superbly well-preserved and nicely original 1950 guitar, showing some very light wear and only minor repair.Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 14 3/8 in. (36.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 3/8 in. (11.1 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). This guitar is relatively clean overall and nicely original, showing only light play and handling wear for it's 70+ years on the planet. The all-original finish still shines with some typical checking, mostly on the top. It shows typical minor dings, dents and scuffs overall. The most notable finish wear is pick marks down to the wood on the lower soundhole rim, scrapes on the turn of the upper treble bout side (probably caused by rubbing on the old case interior) and a couple of scrapes on the top at the outer edges of the lower bout. Really this guitar looks not too much used. It shows a rich patina to the sunburst, darker than many later examples with a very stately look for a budget guitar. There are no cracks visible on the instrument except a tiny grain split off the front upper edge of the pickguard. The original bridge that has been lowered a bit with a new saddle. The original frets and the fingerboard show some minor wear in the lower positions. The tuners are the original Kluson Deluxe strips. Overall this is a sweet example of Gibson's elegant little student flat-top model from the beginning of the '50s, offering a fairly powerful and even tone. It makes an excellent fingerstyle blues guitar and general strummer and would amplify well for stage use in a variety of styles. Excellent Condition.
