- This is the real deal - the Yamaha FG-150 Red Label Nippon Gakki. Online research reveals that this guitar was manufactured in Japan in late January or very early February 1970. See approximate placement of serial #1158091 (the # on the guitar's neck block) on the dating chart at https:yamahavintagefg.boards.net.
It was acquired by my late father in the mid-eighties when he traded a .22 rifle to a local rural "commune" for it! It was my mother's after that, but old age prevented her from ever playing it much. When she passed in 2018, it came to me, and I had no idea of its value until I saw others listed on vintage guitar websites for really righteous prices. I am a life-long player but had no idea of its value.
Overall, the instrument is in very good shape: there are no exterior dings, deal-breaker scrapes or ugly wear marks. There is a very small dent on the underside of the neck - near where it joins the body. There also is some typical, expected play wear on the pick guard, and very minor age-related finish deterioration near there, but nothing concerning.
I will inform you that the action is a wee-bit high, but a luthier much improved that. It's truly pretty good now, and the intonation has always been true. Cowboy chords are effortless, of course, and bar chords are easily fretted up to the 10th fret or so (why would you need to bar chords above the 10th?). I S Y N, The !VOLUME! and tone of this concert guitar is truly exquisite! You will be amazed. I was, and am.
So, you're going to rightly wonder why I, a life-long player, am selling it. Don't blame you. Here's why: I am 72, have played since I was 14, but am plagued with end-stage arthritis in my wrists and most fingers on my right hand and, most distressingly, the pinky of my left hand (I fret with my left - being a typical right-handed player). Additionally, I must thin the herd! I have 13 guitars - some sentimentally kept - some very valuable. I'm an electric guy! So, I can let this one go.
Everything, and I mean everything, on this guitar, is original, functional and in great shape!!
Shipped in a sturdy vinyl covered laminate case, well-packed in an appropriate Reverb brand boxed shipping container.
P.S. If you don't know, this is the very model Country Joe (and the Fish) played at Woodstock in '69!
