About This Listing

1992 Matteson Korina 58 style Flying V in BLUE SPARKLE finish with 1980s brown hardshell case in excellent condition, serial number 8 6324.   (Please Note: am only selling this rare 58 Korina Flying V replica to help raise money for a family member; in this regard, please see my other listings.  Thank you).

The Story:   Scott Matteson was a friend of mine back in the late 1980s through the 1990s, and a gifted and knowledgable guitar tech and builder in the San Diego, CA area. Scott loved old Flying Vs (he was a physically big guy, and loved the scale of a V compared to a Les Paul, which he felt was too small for him). He built a small number of 1958 style Korina Flying V replicas during this time; some customers custom-ordered these Vs (and some ordered Explorers). As I recall, all of the Vs Scott built were always finished in natural lacquer over Korina, which makes this particular example a real rarity as it is the only Matteson V I have ever seen in a Blue Sparkle finish! Wish I knew who he built this guitar for. Scott always talked about finding the right Korina wood for his guitars - and once I asked him how he chose which pickups to use in which guitars. He replied: 'Depends.  Whichever ones I feel like'. As a result, he would sometimes use combinations of old Seymour Duncan humbuckers and older Gibson humbuckers. I had been trying to track Scott down for some time, and came across a very honest and professional gentleman who sold me this blue sparkle Matteson V. I have been very happy to own one of Scott's Vs for the past number of years, but am now moving it on to its next owner in an effort to help a family member. Sadly, Scott passed-away a year or two ago. I regret not being able to contact him; I will always value his knowledge, expertise and friendship all those years ago. RIP, Scott.

Features:

  • Korina 58 style Flying V solidbody guitar.
  • Rare BLUE SPARKLE FINISH with some nice finish checking (this is a BIG sparkle - great stage guitar!).
  • Weight is 7 pounds 7 ounces on a digital scale.
  • 1980s gold Seymour Duncan 59 humbucking neck pickup in neck position.
  • Unmarked gold humbucking pickup in bridge position - may be a Gib - sounds GREAT.
  • Pickups are wired for 'Peter Green Tone' - out of phase in middle position - which is very very cool.
  • Gold plated parts including gold Kluson tuners.
  • 22 large and fat jumbo frets with almost zero wear.
  • Rosewood fingerboard - not sure if Brazilian or Indian - look at photos.
  • Large, fat pronounced V-shaped neck (if you love big V necks, you will love this)
  • White 3-ply pick guard and poker chip input jack plate.
  • 1980s vintage Gibson hardshell case in brown, with pink lining and protective blankey.

Stamped serial number 8 6324.  All of Scott's V's had this same serial number.  He explained it to me once - If I recall correctly, part of the serial number is his birthday.

Condition:  overall this V is in excellent condition for its age (30 years!).  There is a small chip in the black lacquer on the front of the headstock, some tarnish/oxidation to some areas of the gold parts, some very cool checking to the finish, some light scratches - but nothing major.  For a guitar built in 1992, this is in great great shape overall - this custom V has been very well cared for over the years, and is ready for its next great owner.
As much as it hurts to see this rare V go away, I know it is the right thing to do and is going to a very worthy cause.  My hope is that this Matteson Flying V will go to the right person - who will be its next excellent owner - and will enjoy not only how rare it is, but also will enjoy creating great music with it.   She plays great, sounds warm, full and fat like it should, and looks absolutely amazing.   Shipping to the continental US only, fully insured.  Will be packed with great care.  Please feel free to ask all questions - will do my best to answer promptly.  Thanks for looking - have a great day.
