If You're looking for and going to buy a Vintage Cassette Deck - Look no Further. You've found truly an amazing piece of gear, released at the pinnacle of consumer cassette deck development and history. YET - The Nuisance of internal belts and the ultra delicate transport systems does not present a problem with this deck. By now, I know which decks to obtain and offer for sale (after complete evaluation) and which ones to run from. Trust me, I have a pile of them, with a  "white flag of surrender" flying over them. The only reason I did not state the condition as "excellent" is due to a few scratches on the cabinet.

First thing is the Transport. Solid mechanism yet precise utilizing a substantial belt that will ( if EVER need be) replaceable with reasonable effort. (and Metal Flywheels!) You certainly do not need it here.
All solenoid control responds perfectly. Auto Reverse "snaps to, like an young obedient soldier.
There is absolutely nothing to be concerned with here except for shipping. Not to worry, I pack very well to protect these vintage pieces from irreplaceable destruction.

The heads have NO WEAR! - they have been properly cleaned and demagnetized with a real AC powered demagnetizer, done correctly.
The specifications are stunning. I'll bet you're assuming the better side of decks - that's around 16-17 khz response.
Although there are a few scratches on the heavy gauge metal cover the unit is pretty impeccable. Even the protective film is still attached, just peeled back a bit to show that it hasn't permanently bonded itself to the plexiglass screen or has been cleverly reattached to deceive. It's original. Those are my fingers validating.

This Onkyo TA-R301 is an auto-reverse stereo cassette deck with Dolby B/C and HX-Pro noise reduction.

The main features of the Onkyo TA-R301 are: 2 heads, digital tape counter with 4 digits, automatic tape type selection and capable of handling normal, chrome and metal tapes, belt driven auto reverse transport.

Typical front loading cassette deck with the cassette compartment located on the left side of the deck. Tape eject is operated mechanically and the cassette needs to be placed with the side to be played facing forward in the cassette well.

Level meters used on the TA-R301 are generic digital peak reading meters. Full-logic transport controls used on the TA-R301 let it respond to the slightest finger contact for fast and effortless transport function selection.

To ensure the best response from the wide variety of tapes available adjustment of, bias, to optimum levels can be performed prior to recording.

Dolby C-type used in the TA-R301 provides 20 dB of noise reduction above about 1,000 Hz, fully doubling the amount given by B-type. The Dolby HX PRO system provides precise bias control during recording to reduce distortion and improve linearity in the high-frequency range, the result is recorded sound that is highly faithful to the original. The 19kHz multiplex pilot slgnal present in FM stereo broadcasts can cause false triggering of the noise reduction system. The switchable MPX filter of the TA-R301 filters out the pilot signal, and assuring proper Dolby processing of FM stereo programs.

For undisturbed listening a jack connector for a pair of stereo headphones is supplied. Connection to other audio components for playback can be achieved by a RCA cable and recording from a source by a RCA cable.

The only thing is see lacking is Microphone inputs but I'm certain you'd be using a good quality Microphone preamp for live recordings
