About This Listing

Used - Very Good Condition
  • Body: there a couple of easily noticeable chips and dings in the finish on the top of the body on the bass side of the lower bout (where your arm would rest), plus there are some noticeable lacquer cracks on the lower bout of the top; the top, back, and sides all show some light scuff marks, scratches, and dings--light buckle rash, plus a medium to large cloudy spot in the lacquer can be seen on the back; the pickguard has a few very light scratches on it from typical use; the bottom strap hook is missing
  • Neck, Fretboard, and Headstock: the fretboard looks almost flawless except for some thin spots of dried glue between the nut and first fret; the back of the neck has some light surface scratches and small dings along the binding on the bass side near the 6th fret position, plus a few small chips in the lacquer can be found along both sides of the fretboard binding; a strap hook has been added onto the neck heel; the front, back, and sides of the headstock show some scratches, scuff marks, and tiny dings, plus the lacquer around the headstock inlays looks a bit worn
  • Action and Playability: the action is about medium, plus the neck is straight, the truss rod functions flawlessly, the bridge is not lifting, and there is no neck heel separation
  • Frets: light to moderate wear
  • Hardware: all looks fantastic, however this guitar had some aftermarket electronics installed at some point, but arrived at our shop without the electronics so the original bottom strap hook is missing and the battery clamp is still visible on the inside neck block; a strap hook has been added onto the neck heel
  • Includes: acoustic guitar and original Gibson hardshell cases

Originally, the Advanced Jumbo replaced the original Gibson Jumbo. It had rosewood back and sides, an Adirondack Spruce soundboard, a 25.5-inch scale length, and a 1.725-inch nut width. The Advanced Jumbo and the Jumbo 35 were both introduced in 1936. Both of these instruments were 16 inches (410 mm) wide, and had 14 frets clear of their bodies. The Jumbo 35 was the lower-priced model, going for just $35. The Advanced Jumbo was retailed at $80, still less than the $100 Martin D-28 Dreadnought. It was also built a bit more inexpensively than the Martin instrument. For example, the main braces did not tuck into the side bandings, which could cause problems. The Gibson Advanced Jumbo was favored by 1930s players such as Bob Baker, a singing cowboy. A famous bluegrass player said the Advanced Jumbo blew him away the first time he ever touched one. According to one collector, "The Advanced Jumbo was probably the best flattop in Gibson's entire history, a wonderful guitar". However, production ceased after a small run of 300 guitars. In 1990 the Gibson Advanced Jumbo was born again with a reissue (which were discontinued again in 1999) and came in sunburst colors, some with Indian rosewood, some with Brazilian, and some with flamed maple, limited editions were also available. This AJ reissue was born in 1992 and features a solid spruce top and solid Indian rosewood back and sides! Play this beauty and you will be wondering what Gibson was thinking when they discontinued graceful instrument!
