Rare 1940’s era Shure model 55C “Unidyne” HiZ impedance dynamic microphone with period correct Atlas stand. The mic comes with an 8 foot vintage Amphenol cable and a standard 1/4" plug, ready to connect to most any modern mixer or interface. The original Unidyne dynamic element is still present and is working. There are some scratches and scuffs as seen in the photos, but the chrome still has a nice high shine. There is a section of the cable thread that is missing, but the cable screws on fine and it is not noticeable when connected (see photo #9). The screen is clean with no holes or tears.
The last photo is of the 1939 Shure Brothers data sheet on the model 55 Unidyne series (data sheet not included). The 55C like this one was the high impedance model at the time and was manufactured by Shure in Chicago from the late 1930's to the mid 1940's after which Shure added a multi-impedance switch to the bottom.
Popular with Elvis Presley and other recording stars of the era, the Shure 55 is an iconic design, an absolute classic. The cardioid “Unidyne” feature was the first of its kind to provide expanded fidelity while drastically reducing the feedback and distortion which plagued most crystal, carbon and ribbon mics of the early 20th century. Its design was much copied by other manufacturers and revolutionized microphone use for recording, broadcasting and live performance.
Not just popular with entertainers, the 55 can be seen in many famous historical moments such as the signing of the surrender of the Japanese to General McArthur in 1945 and the famous “Dewey Defeats Truman” photo of president Truman in 1948.
This version is lovingly nicknamed the “Fat Boy” because it is a much larger version of the model 55, first introduced in the 1930’s. It was discontinued in the 1950’s with the popularity of the smaller 55S (“S” for small!) version.
