Up for sale is a very rare and very unique vintage Kamaka ukulele.  I am far from an expert on ukuleles, but based on the characteristics of this uke, I believe it must be a one-of-a-kind Custom order (or possibly a prototype or employee build).

This ukulele measures 26" total length, 11.5" body, 13 frets to the body, 17" scale and about a 1 3/8" nut.  It appears to be all Koa, including the bridge and fretboard.  From what I can tell, the top, back and sides are solid.  This amazing ukulele has many of the custom features you have seen before, but rarely do you see them all on one instrument.  Starting first with it being a 6-string lili'u uke, it also has the "sail" headstock (rare on a tenor model), the pin bridge, and, of course, the cutaway body with the raised "pickguard.  The "pickguard" appears to be a very thin piece of koa attached to the soundboard.  It is tapered on the edges, possibly sanded down after application, and is done so well that it almost seems to be part of the top.  Visibly, it is very hard to see where the "pickguard" ends and the soundboard starts (other than noting the difference in wood color and grain).  The pin bridge and the "pickguard," along with the cut-away access to the upper frets, gives this uke a very unique guitar-like appearance.

I really wanted to pin down the date of this uke, but my research came up short.  There may be a very faint date stamp on the interior left side waist, but it is very hard to make out.  Maybe it isn't there at all, but it sure looks like something.  Couldn't really even get a good picture of it.  Nevertheless, this uke does have the remnants of the original Gold Label signifying it was at least built between 1954-1969.  Apparently, the original owner (builder?) thought it would be a good idea to rip out the label and write his personal information there.  This may have been done prior to assembly, because it seems almost impossible to me to have written that far inside the ukulele after the fact.  The writing says: "3477 Pahoa Ave, Phone 734-4872" and then below the back brace, "Luther Chang" and some other stuff I can't make out.  (That address, by the way, is only about 3 miles from the original Kamaka factory.)

When I acquired this ukulele, it did have some smaller cracks on the body and the neck pocket had collapsed.  My luthier did a great job repairing it, but you can see some evidence of the cracks along each side of the fretboard.  The ukulele was strung up with new Kamaka Lili'u strings, and it now plays and sounds great!  The string action is just about where you would want it and there are no dead notes or buzzing anywhere on the fretboard.  The ukulele does seem to go out of tune, but the strings are still relaxing and possibly the friction tuners need to be tightened a bit.  I don't think this is a problem, but worst case scenario would be new tuners.  The uke does show wear and appears to have been played quite a bit.  There are some finger divots on the fretboard (mostly 1-4 frets) from play wear, but not too bad.  The fretboard may have been over-sprayed, but I am not sure (like I said, not an expert).

This rare and unique ukulele looks great and plays great, and is surely of some historic significance, especially if you are a collector.  I have done my best to describe this ukulele with my limited knowledge, but please, if you have any knowledge or information regarding this ukulele, let me know so I can share it here.  Ukulele includes a new case that works and looks great.  Shipping includes insurance for the full purchase value.  Shipping to the lower 48 and Hawaii (includes an additional charge).  Willing to consider offers.  Thanks for reading my listing!
