Maton
Supremes were made between 1953 and 1962 (serial numbers 304 to 1691). The serial
number on this guitar - 759 – means it was probably made in 1956 (thank you Neil at Grouse Guitars for this information).
This
vintage electric archtop guitar has a laminated cutaway Maple or Mahogany body and Maple top.
Neck is laminated Mahogany and Maple, and the fretboard is most likely Tasmanian
myrtle.
The frets
have been professionally dressed, and the slim neck is set well for optimum action
and playability.
Body
width at the lower bout is 17", and depth is 3 1/2". Scale length is 25
1/2 inch.
The EG240
sports a great-sounding single-coil bar-magnet pickup.
The
guitar is in good original condition (the finish is crazed and somewhat scuffed and
scratched on the back ) with no cracks.
The
guitar comes with its original case, which is in surprisingly good nick for its
age, though it is in need of some repair to hinges and handle. The tailpiece
has a licence number or something similar engraved on it (pictured).
The
previous owner, Neil at Grouse Guitars, described this lovely guitar in the
following glowing terms: “The neck is … effortless and fast! Neck angle is
superb - a completely no-issues vintage Maton archtop … one of the
best-sounding electric archtops I have ever come across, whether plugged into a
vintage valve amp or solid-state acoustic amp … You will love it!”
