NOTE: There was an increase in the cost of components for this build which is reflected in the price of this pedal.
The Parentheses Fuzz is a pedal inspired by a "life" pedal from that "disaster" pedal company, which includes a boost, Rat-like distortion, and an octave effect.
This is the second batch of my Parenthese Fuzz builds...or MkII if you will. As with the previous build, I wanted something that was more playful, colorful, and lively. This build includes a new design that is less playschool and more party.
The original Life pedal as well as other versions of the Parentheses Fuzz I've seen tend to look quite dark, forbidding, and...well...lifeless. Which is ironic considering this is the "Life" pedal. As such, I came up with something more playful, colorful, and more lively. A pedal like this needs to be fun. Hopefully you'll agree.
The original included a three-way clipping switch with options for Op-Amp, Asymmetrical, and Symmetrical clipping. The Parentheses Fuzz add a fourth option for Germanium diode clipping using a set of 1N34A NOS diodes. A second set of 1N34A's are also used for the octave effect.
This new build includes a number of enhancements over the previous build. For instance...
An OP07 op-amps is used to generate the distoration. While the original useda LM308 op-amp, newer Rat pedals use an OP07, which is technically a better op-amp. There are no changes to the tone and you still get the same bad-ass Rat sound.
The pedal utilizes a PCB from PedalPCB. NOS 1N34A Germanium diodes are still used. I opted for high quality soft-click switches and better 1/4" Lumberg jacks for this build. Also used tantelum capacitors for all but one of the higher value caps. This results in longer lasting capacitors and potentially lower noise.
Great care and attention was placed in the construction, which should result in a pedal that will last the owner a long time.
Pedal controls include the following:
- Boost - Controls the level of boost (Note: When boost is engaged, the sound will get muted when turned all the way down)
- Distortion - Controls the amount of distortion
- Filter - Adjusts a low pass EQ filter with a range around 500Hz to 30kHz
- Amplitude - Output volume for distortion and octave effects
- Octave - Blends the amount of octave effect with the distortion signal
- Clipping - Select Op-Amp, Asymmetrical, Symmetrical, or Germanium options (Warning: There will be volume differences between clipping options!)
- Boost switch - Engage/disengage Boost effect
- Octave switch - Engage/disengage Octave effect (Note: Distoration must be engaged to work)
- Distortion - Engage/disengage Distortion effect
