There aren't many guitars that summon the tone-gods quite like Gibson's Les Paul Special. Take some good P-90 pickups (which really cover sooo much ground in the right hands) and mate them to a nice slab o mahogany. String up the guitar around a wrap-around tailpiece, give it some strums, and feel the guitar come to life in your hands. Turn up your amp and bask in the warm glow. That's true happiness to guitar-heads like us.
Yes, you guessed right, we like vintage Gibson Les Paul Specials and Juniors, and this one sounds as good and plays as good as the very best of them. Like a lot guitars that have survived this long it has needed some help to keep on its feet, and a vintage Gibson is always worth fixing up. It looks like the neck had come out of the guitar and has been re-set. We cannot say if it broke or just came loose as the guitar has been amateurly refinished since then. You can faintly see that some dowels were inserted when the repair way done. It doesn't look like there were any other breaks, headstock or otherwise, which can usually be spotted when the lacquer shrinks. The guitar has repro tuners and truss rod cover, and a nice wraparound bridge with a sharp string break for the strings. The P-90s and electronics are correct and sound glorious!
The serial number dates the guitar to 1962 but Gibson stopped using this body style in 1961 so it was possibly made from leftover parts, which was rare but know to happen throughout the 1960s at Gibson.
The neck is true to the era with a wide and thin feel. Good weight on this one: 6.8 lbs. Gibson hard case included. Good wood. Good pickups. Great guitar.
