A shruti box (surpeti) is an instrument that traditionally works with a system of bellows. It resembles a harmonium and is used to create a drone in a practice lesson or concert of classical Indian music. It is used as an accompaniment to other instruments and especially to the flute. The use of the Shruti box, with the intercultural influences of world music and new age music, has resulted in a drone for many other instruments and singers.
