About This Listing

Here is a very unique piece of guitar history - a Fender Custom Shop Prototype of the Pro Junior Woody. Based on the 1946 design, this is the first recreation they made in the early years of the Custom Shop during a time when Fender was creating many of its best reissues. This is a gorgeous amp with a wonderful tone. It was owned by Fender Chief Product Strategist, Richard McDonald, kept it in his office at Fender. It seems to have just sat on the shelf without being played much at all. He sold it from his personal collection after he retired and I bought it from that dealer.
The amp is in excellent condition with very little playing time. The gold accents, cloth back, cloth face, and wood cabinet are all in great condition, with hardly any marks: there is a small chip out of one of the screw holes on the handle which looks like it was done in the factory. I don't see any other imperfections but it is technically used so there may be tiny marks.
It is also functionally great. There is no scratchy sound at all and smooth taper to the volume and tone. The volume gets hot around 4 as expected. It breaks up after 6 if you can get it that loud. It has a normal amount of hum for this kind of amp, which is definitely audible but normal.
The tone of this amp is warm and rich. I have another Pro Junior Woody for sale and they are very different sounding amps: that butterscotch model is much more bright and modern sounding. This bubinga amp has a very warm and creamy sound. It starts out slightly muted with the tone control off, but it is very responsive - brightens with more tone and also breaks up if you crank it. It's loud - 15 watts of tube power and a 10" Eminence speaker is plenty loud. The tone of this amp is much bigger than you may expect. It is not a "sparkly" kind of Fender tone - this is the Blues Deluxe circuit and has that warmer tone. However, since it's a Custom Shop Prototype, it has its own tone, which is warmer than any of these amps I've heard.
This prototype was hand built in a bubinga cabinet by long time Fender cabinet maker Bill Giles. It looks as beautiful as it sounds. Great collectors item and also a wonderful amp to play every day. This is one I will regret not keeping in my own collection, so grab it before I change my mind.
Sold "as is" because I don't want the risk of shipping it back and forth. You still have buyer protection and guarantee that it is as shown in the photos and functions perfectly.
