I purchased this great guitar at Manny's music in 1972 while attending Berklee. However, it didn't see very much play. The guitar is marked as a second based on the small "2" above the serial number on the Headstock. However, while it was being tweaked at the great Luthier Cristian Mirabella's shop Cristian couldn't see what made it a "2." It might be the grain on the neck?
The neck is Mahogony with NO volute. ( oh boy those Volute obsessives) Fret board is Rosewood, Frets are perfect, this guitar was never played that much.
The only imperfection is a slight wearing of the finish on the back of the neck which was caused by the case. It's pictured. Gibson only inscribed the pickup covers on their Humbucker pickups with the word "Gibson" for about a year and 1/2. (the pickups are considered valuable by some!) They're much sought after since they never did it again, not on any reissue!
It's important that both the back and the front of ALL I75's are Maple Birch laminates. The laminate is what makes the 175 the great, multi purpose guitar it is. Gibson developed the Laminate build in 1949 to avoid feedback. That's why Jim Hall and Steve Howe could play the same guitar, in such different situations! Ordinary archtops feedback at high volume, not so high volume because of the spruce, not the 175. I LOVE these guitars. (The only reason I'm selling is I just purchased a 1965.) If you have any questions let me know. Oh yeh...Original Hard Shell Gibson Case. Made In Kalamazoo, MI with love.
