I came across this really cool vintage toy gun in a Lithuanian thrift shop a while back. It is apparently from the early 80's, had Cyrillic writing on it, and used a battery type that no longer exists. Once I got it apart I found that it used a motorized mechanism to make a clacking sound that was pretty cool, but I thought I could make it more interesting by building a lazer-ey sounding synth inside of it, so that's what I did.
The circuit I put inside is a classic noise-maker: the Atari Punk Console, which as the name suggest makes a lot of retro game sounds; beeps, boops, arps, drones, and FX sounds. I added an LFO and a couple of CV inputs to it as well. You can activate it by pulling the trigger, or there is a drone mode as well.
A light in the tip flashes with the sound, and an LED on the side indicates the LFO rate and shape.
Runs on a 9V battery.
