I made a melting flying V out of 19th century oak flooring that's covered in layers of crappy laminate flooring and vinyl peel-and-stick tiles, topped with a custom, hand-tufted rug made by my friend .
Why? Well, watch the video and it'll make more sense, but in a nutshell, Keith has been making rugs based on melted popsicles. I loved the concept and specificity - and wanted to get involved. So we came up with the "Guitarpet" - a melting guitar. We decided against modeling the shape and shag after famous guitars (sorry, Zack, Eddie, SRV and ZZ) and went with a fresh design, but totally inspired by David Bowie (RIP). I mean, he deserves a signature guitar too, am I right?
You'll notice the top edges of the guitar are carpeted for comfortable playing, but the melted edges reveal the layers of flooring underneath.
Why made from layers of flooring? Anyone who has ever owned a house more than 50 years old knows why.
The neck is made from locally felled ash with a local black locust fingerboard that naturally glows under black light. Really.
I "melted" the V inlays and headstock a bit, too. 25.5" scale, 12" radius, Tuneomatic, string through carpet design with 2 custom New Perspectives Music mini humbuckers made by Gemini Pickups. Oil finish on neck.
If you're looking at this guitar like it's a viable replacement for you daily-gigging Strat or Paul, you're more tweaked than I am!
Yes, it's heavy. Yes, it does not fit in a case. Yes, the carpet will look and smell disgusting after one gig. But yes, it plays and sounds great. And yes, you still want it.
Oh, and yes, I'm also the "Guitar Made of Nails" guy. Buy 'em both and I'll give you a great deal :)
I mean, is it REALLY a guitar collection without something like this in it? And man, if Keith or I get famous, it'll be worth a fortune!
