RARE ca. January 1986 (letter code date stamp "ZA").
LEFT-HANDED Rickenbacker 4001v63 in Fireglo finish, with even rarer custom ordered PMC (Paul McCartney) flipped headstock option. This option was not widely advertised by Rickenbacker at the time, and was essentially a custom order request. This is a very early example, built within about a year of the introduction of the model in late 1984. It is well worn (naturally relic'd over 30 years), with plenty of finish wear, chips, scratches and dings but NO breaks and it plays/sounds great! Please see pics for a more detailed explanation of the condition.
Comes equipped with original vintage and hard-to-find, Rickenbacker Maxima S440 flatwound strings, ala Paul McCartney.
A side note... "Z" is the last letter year in the original Rickenbacker two letter (year & month) serial number sequence, beginning with "AA" in 1961. This 4001v63 instrument is date stamped "ZA"; Paul McCartney's bass is date stamped "DA". For the last 30 years, Rickenbacker has been using a different date code sequence, featuring a letter & number as the date code method. They ran out of letters after 1986!
The bass has just had a pro setup with a new genuine Rickenbacker Bakelite nut. The frets do have divot wear but the bass still plays pretty buzz free across the neck. The original fireglo finish has some fading to it but it looks great. The "fading" in the fireglo finish comes from yellowing of the clearcoat, giving it a softer appearance.
The original pickguard and bridge come with the bass but are in the case. A genuine Rickenbacker replacement bridge, pickguard and Horseshoe PU (identical to the original but New old stock from Rickenbacker) are currently on the instrument. One replacement tuner bushing on the "G" string. I hate it when those puppies fall out and go missing! All original factory routes under the pickguard.
A very clean Mapleglo Lefty 4001v63 from the '90's, sold on reverb about four months ago for $5,780, so $3,850 seems a reasonable price for one of these. Especially in Fireglo, with a great deal of character. Sort of what Macca's bass might have looked like...
