About This Listing
For sale is an antique 1923 Vega Style F tenor 4 string banjo. Serial number "61649" stamped on the side of the interior body ring(frame) along with "MADE BY THE VEGA COMPANY BOSTON, MASS, USA STYLE F". Banjo comes with a non-original, chipboard case.
CONDITION: Instrument is in good antique condition, in our opinion. This piece received a full pro set-up by our luthier and is in good playing condition, especially when considering the age of the instrument. Cosmetically, there is some wear on the rim, head, and back of the body. Tailpiece looks to be original and is stamped "NO KNOT, PAT NOV 19, 1901" The bridge is a much later replacement & one of the rods that secures the body is missing on the middle of the treble bout side of the body. The head (skin) is also a replacement & is marked "REMO WEATHER KING BANJO MADE IN USA". The tuning pegs look to be original as do the off white Ivoroid tuning buttons. The nut also looks original, and the frets also look original to our eyes. Although there is still meat on the frets, there are also SOME MINOR string indentations from the 1st to the 3rd frets. This instrument may need some adjustments, or an additional set up, depending on your comfort level. This is an antique, yet playable instrument, and was considered to be an entry level tenor banjo upon its fabrication. We'd like to thank an astute Reverb user for alerting us about some errors which we made in our original listing. Please see the photos as an extension of our written description.
DIMENSIONS:
Scale length is 21".
Neck appears to be mahogany with a rosewood fingerboard & nickel fret wire.
The ring which forms the body is laminated(possibly an early type of plywood) with a mahogany veneer externally & internally; the rear side of this body is also bound with what looks to be tortoise colored celluloid(plastic) binding.
Body has a diameter of 11" and the neck is approximately 19 1/4" long from tip of head stock to end of neck.
17 frets
Fingerboard measures 1 1/4" wide at the 1st fret, 1 3/8" wide at the 5th fret, & 1 1/2" wide at the 12th fret.

**SPECIAL NOTE: It is with a very heavy heart that we wish to share the news of the recent passing of our almost 12 year old red & white beagle, our beloved Ace. He was our mascot, and namesake of this site. He gave us the initial inspiration to sign up with Reverb.com, primarily due to the name that we chose to use on this fantastic website. He was also the chief of security & official greeter for our bricks & mortar shop, always ready to engage with the customers; tail wagging, happy & always on the lookout for any ingestible treats that the customer wished to share with him
as well as a nice butt or belly rub. Ace is, and will continue to be, very sorely missed by all who knew him. Our shop will never be the same without his presence. But, his intense spirit and joie de vivre lives on, through our loving memories of him and also via this wonderful platform online. Love the heck out of ya, Acie!!
Sadly, Ellis Ace's Axe Attic
TO ALL PROSPECTIVE BUYERS: If you are contemplating making us an offer on this or any of our other varied listings, please be fully prepared to follow through, pay for your item and consummate the deal if your offer is accepted by us. We have been hit hard lately by offers from buyers with little or even zero feedback or inexperience on this selling platform. These buyers never paid for their purchases. Obviously, we would rather this never happen again, but sometimes it will occur no matter what our wishes are. Thank you for reading this far and for your patience and understanding as well. And, in the immortal lyrics from an early Steve Miller Band tune, “You gotta keep on keepin on”!
