About This Listing

The USA made Custom 24 from this era is a truly great instrument which offered a new standard in playability and tone shaping.  I am the only owner and this was my main gigging and studio guitar for my first ten years in New York.

Body:  The mahogany back and maple top on this guitar make it resonate like an acoustic— you can feel every note throughout the body and neck.  I LOVE this and there are few guitars that operate this efficiently TBH.  The contours are somewhere between Les Paul and Strat; it fits the player ergonomically and just feels great to hold. Weighing in at a coquettish 8.2 pounds.

Neck:  Medium C profile set neck (glued on like a Les Paul) with glossy nitro finish means a good grip at every position.  I just leveled and dressed the big (24!) frets which means it plays like new; frets have years left in them.  Action measures in at .07 bass and .06 treble with a 10" radius.  I haven’t read much about this from other sources but IMO the break angle across the headstock makes for very easy bending on these guitars.  And it has those pretty abalone signature PRS bird inlays.

Electronics:  Original pick-ups are HFS treble and Vintage Bass, five-way rotary selector with the standard PRS switching allows for both humbucker and Strat style tones (THIS is awesome!).  Pick up resistance: bridge is an insane 15.04, neck at 8.61

Hardware: PRS trem system.  The origial PRS/Schaller locking tuners help make this one of the best intonating guitars I've ever played.  Low friction nut.  I've never had any issues in two decades of use.

Cosmetics:  The nitro finish is smooth and shiny after almost twenty years with no clouding or checking.  There is the normal finish dings and surface micro scratching as found on a working musician's instrument of this age.  Bridge has worn through the chrome at spots to what looks like a brass colored under layer.  One headstock point has a ding which is down to the wood.  There is a deeper finish crack on the lower bout top by the cable jack; about an inch long and down to the wood at spots.  This is a stable injury which doesn't affect the guitar's structure and I never saw the value in repairing; only visible up close.

In Summary:  A truly fine USA made instrument of a build standard not often seen in today's production level guitars-- with it's incredible playability and tonal versatility this could easily be your go-to studio or gigging instrument.   While they consistently hold their value, I expect these instruments to one day fetch some serious prices and so may be a good investment.

I am not a million dollar business trying to sell you things you don't need. I am a full time player based in New York City and I only buy and sell instruments that are gig and studio worthy. The instruments you are considering here have been in and out of New York recording studios, featured on TV, played onstage at places like The Town Hall and the Beacon Theatre, and used for gigs in Broadway pit orchestras. I treat every instrument with the love and respect that these unique creative vehicles deserve. I know basic lutherie and keep my instruments clean and set up to the best playing specs because I want you to receive the gear you've always wanted when you open that box. Thanks for reading and happy picking.
