1962 Daphne Blue Strat listing description
Serial number: 78500
Neck code: 2 Sep 62 B
Potentiometer manufacturing date codes: 304 6232
The body of this guitar appears to exhibit a Fender factory-original custom color Daphne Blue finish, with small areas of touchup. The majority of the body finish appears to exhibit the type of directionality, lacquer checking and Desert Sand color undercoat which we associate with Fender factory-original custom color finishes of this period. The balance of the original finish exhibits typical deterioration with lacquer checking, small impact marks, surface scratches, compression marks, edge-chipping, and a significant area of complete loss on the neck rear, due to friction rubbing.
Modifications and condition issues: several of the pickguard attachment screw holes have been filled (appears to be repaired using wooden dowel rod without finish touch-up) and re-drilled in an adjacent location (in order to accommodate on-going pickguard shrinkage), the output lead solder joints at the volume pot have been reheated, the string nut and one of the pickguard attachment screws have been replaced, and the removable metal bridge cover (ashtray) is missing.
In other respects, this instrument conforms to the typical specifications of the model for the period in which it was made with double-cutaway body, “mint green” multi-ply beveled-edge plastic pickguard, integral tremolo/bridge assembly, three single-coil pickups with black bottom bobbins, three white plastic “skirt-style” control knobs, three-position “blade style” pickup selector switch, maple neck with adjustable truss rod, four-bolt metal neck attachment plate with die-stamped serial number, “spaghetti style” Fender logo peghead decal with three patent numbers, “single-line” Kluson Deluxe tuners with metal buttons, one rectangular “butterfly” string tree, 21-fret Brazilian rosewood veneer fingerboard with “narrow clay dot” inlays, a mixture of nickel and chrome-plated metal hardware, and other typical Stratocaster model appointments.
The instrument is housed in a rectangular Fender hard-shell case from an earlier period (mid-year 1959 through 1961) with brown Tolex exterior covering and red plush interior lining.
Happy to provide any more photos upon request.
