Technically, as was pointed out to me, this is a post-Fender instrument, since Fender purchased Tacoma in October 2004 and this has a serial number indicating it was made in June of 2005. However, it is a handwritten serial number like the pre-fender tacoma's I have owned, and this one is exactly like the other two DM9's I have owned, so I would imagine this was being built prior to the sale or Fender getting their cost-efficiency experts in to ruin things. I have owned post-Fender Tacoma's with the stamped serial numbers, and they are nothing like these Tacoma's. According to Wikipedia:
"FMIC purchased the company in October 2004 for a price estimated between $2 million and $4 million and made it a division of Fender. In 2008, Fender announced it would close the 44,000 square foot plant and lay off 70 employees, intending to move Tacoma production to existing Fender factories in Connecticut to take advantage of economies of scale. When the move was announced, former Tacoma Guitars CEO Ferdinand Boyce suggested that Fender's decision to close the plant was motivated in part by a desire to the Tacoma manufacturing process to cut costs."
To make a long story short, this is still one of the good ones.
Details:
Solid-wood instrument featured a sitka spruce top, mahogany back and sides, a rosewood fretboard and bridge, tortoise-colored body binding, abalone dot inlays, a four-color wood rosette, and a light satin finish. Clear pickguard. The EM9's body measures 15 1/2" rather small for a jumbo, but wider than a parlor guitar. The body is joined at the 14th fret by a 25 1/2"-scale neck. Comes with original hardshell case.
