Look at this fantastic amp! Brings a tear to my eye. Makes me want to pull up to the Fender factory in the 70’s on a Triumph Scrambler in the California sun and get to work soldering one of these together. Then I want to finish work and bring one over to Sound City where Fleetwood Mac is recording Rumors. Guess I couldn’t get it there on a motorcycle. Maybe someone could give me a ride? You think my motorcycle will be safe overnight? This story is falling apart!
Non-master volume 1971 Fender Super Reverb. Just writing that sentence makes me happy. I’m biased because I am selling this amp, but this is the best era of vintage Fender Amps to buy right now. The original 60’s black face amps are of course totally awesome, but they’ve gotten so prohibitively expensive they’re basically just for museums or like Lenny Kravitz now (No shade on Lenny, love you Lenny). The silverface amps with master volumes that came after this...they’re just not as good. They can be great, but they won’t be as great as the non-master volume ones. With some of smaller vintage Fender amps it’s not totally critical which era from the late 60’s/early 70’s that you get. The Champs, Princetons, and the Vibro Champ are more similar circuits to the ones before it. The larger amps like the Deluxes, Supers, Vibroluxes, Twins, Bassmans...you really do want the ones with non-master volume. They didn’t just add a master volume, they changed the whole circuit and it’s a totally different amp.
So this is pretty much the best amp I’ve ever had! It’s got the look, the sound, the response, the natural compression and sparkle, and that perfect squishiness that comes right back to you. It KILLS on stage. I played it for a few shows before the pandemic hit and they were some of the best shows I’ve ever played. The expression “takes pedals really well” always just seemed to me like something someone blurts out when they’re trying to sell you an amp, but this amp actually does take pedals super well. It changes perfectly with what you change about your tone and picking dynamic. If you feel and play delicately, it will be super pretty and delicate. If you’re angry, it freaks out and snarls. A good amp will take anything you put into it and make it better, whether it’s a guitar, pedals, or emotion. In the band I played it with I have a tele through like 5 stages of gain and a reverb pedal, and it totally kills. I recorded my last EP with this amp, switching between an MIJ Tele and a Univox Hi-Flier. The tele was super pretty and sparkly, the Univox was super untamed and disgusting, and the Super brings out the best in both of them. A good amp is supposed to make a great guitar amazing, and a good guitar is supposed to make great amp amazing. It’s a symbiotic relationship. To me, you can make a Fender sound like a Marshall or a Vox or whatever with the right drive pedals, but you can’t go backwards and make a Marshall or a Vox sounds like a Fender. I use this amp with the Catalinbred CB40, which is like an AC30 in a can, and presto the Super is an AC30. I think that’s the most valuable part of starting with a clean platform versus a crunchy platform. You can make clean crunchy, you can’t make crunchy clean.
I love the Reverb and Tremolo channel for going direct in with no pedals, but I also straight up love that dry channel! Pedal reverbs are really great now, but they just weren’t good for a long time so it was all about an amp’s on board reverb. Now that it’s the era of Bring-Your-Own-Reverb I have fallen in love with the dry channel of this amp. It’s a different tone, a little more punchy and less squishy with the absence of the Reverb Circuit. Comes with the original footswitch!
The transformer codes date to 1971, and they’re within a few weeks of each other, so I think it’s right. It’s probably been to a few techs in it’s life, but I’ve just had my tech go through it and it’s totally killing! It’s in really great shape for it’s age, it’s been kept under a really nice cover whenever it’s not being played. The cover comes with the amp. Fantastic amp!
Going to include a very sparkly guitar sounding music video that I recorded with this amp. Hope you enjoy it! The amp opens the song, so it's a good example of the sound. Follow my project Crasher online if you dig.
