<<Update on 11/27/2016: Read the story of the songwriter Nate Leavitt's Jose Morales guitar and listen to the guitar. Google "nateleavittmusic.com," "Jose Morales." Below, I attached the Youtube video in which Nate Leavitt plays his Jose Morales guitar. His has cypress back and sides. The sound is extremely similar to that of my guitar. I hope the video will give you some idea of what my guitar sounds like. >>
Jose Morales (1914-1977) of Granada who learned guitar making from the master luthiers Eduardo Ferrer and Manuel de la Chica. He was a policeman by profession, but after retiring, he opened his own guitar shop in the legendary guitar street "Cuesta de Gomerez" where many famous guitar luthiers worked, including Eduardo Ferrer and Jose Lopez Bellido. He died early so that only a small number of his handmade guitars are left. His son Antonio Morales took over the business. The shop was closed in 2006.
I'm selling my beautiful Jose Morales concert classical guitar made in 1974 in Granada, Spain. This is an extremely rare "signature" Jose Morales. Don't be confused with his Estudio models that are circulated on Internet. My guitar has a solid spruce top, solid rosewood back & sides (100% sure--there are side bracings!), and ebony fretboard. The original bone nut and saddle. The sound is bright, colorful and lyrical, typical of the Granada School. Especially, the bell-like trebles are quite impressive. The bright basses go well with the trebles. The guitar is light weighted, which is opposed to heavy guitars of the Madrid School. The overall aesthetic and construction clearly reflect characteristics of the Granada school. Balance, sustain, and intonation are all excellent. The scale length is 660mm, not the standard 650mm, but it is very easy to play. The neck is not as chunky as that of Ramirez 1A of the 70s (although not as slim as today's Cordoba guitars), Nevertheless, however, if you have small hands, it's safe not to buy this guitar. The action is the standard 4mm at 12th fret of low E and 3mm at 12th fret of high E (see the last pic). No buzzing however hard you play. The nut width is 51mm. The volume is already loud, but it will open up more as you plays. The guitar slept in the case over 40 years without being played, so you need to play it more to open up its potential.
Condition (very good): Finish checking throughout the top of the guitar, but it should be normal for its age. Not serious. Not easily noticeable, so impossible to picture. Aside from the finish checking, the top is clean and has only some light scratches (The pics show white or color blemishes but they are not scratches. The top is a figured bearclaw spruce so that it has natural figures (wood grains)). The sides have some minor scratches and chips. The back is also clean but has two shallow cracks (I pictured them). They appear to be already repaired. They are stable and don't go all the way through. They are not easily noticeable. I don't think they affect the sound. If the cracks bother you, don't buy the guitar! It's very common that vintage classical guitars have cracks. The tuners look old and are not very smooth, but work okay. I didn't modify the original set-up because the playability was already excellent from the beginning. I cleaned the fretboard, the fret, and the inside of the guitar. The guitar is ready to be played. The strings (D'addario EJ45 normal) are a little bit old but I didn't replace them. You put your favorite strings. The original hardshell case is included. It's not in great condition, but it does its job well.
If you're looking for an affordable luthier-built concert guitar and for a bright-sounding traditional Spanish guitar, and a big fan of guitars of the Granada School, this Jose Morales guitar is right for you. Shipping is free!! I ship only to Continental US. In the case of return, the buyer pays the return shipping, which is the Reverb policy. More pics are available by request. Buying a guitar is not an easy job. It is like adopting a child--you should be very careful. So, I expect you to ask many questions. Thank you for reading.
