Up for sale a nice pair of very rare germanium microphone preamps. WSW Siemens 811 430D. Pulled out from a working console manufactured between 1960 and 1967.
This pair is from 1965 as you can see in the last photos. Very close serial numbers. Around 50db of low noise amplification. It's one of my favorite WSW preamps. The way it handled transients and interpret dynamics of microphone signal is, for me, what set it apart from current "high end" boutique products which very often claim its roots in vintage gear. Each pre is equipped with two highest quality permalloy transformers. The way permalloy transformers were made is not possible to mimic nowadays. It was a time and money consuming process.
This kind of equipment was made only for public institutions in times where cost wasn't a concern and it's obvious seeing building quality and components used. This handmade gear will last for the next 50 years for sure. No esoteric parts inside, every transistor and condenser is still easy to buy.
It has a 5 step gain switch and separate, detachable, easy to clean EAB carbon fader in very good technical shape (no noise during movement)
This pre is designed for microphones only, it's not a universal amplifier but for a reason. Sound is smooth and open with kind of sweet highs and tight lows. When measured it has almost flat frequency response. When pushed, generate nice 2nd harmonics.
Additional controls are :
1.high pass filter (gentle roll off starting around 100 khz),
2.Switch for different microphone impedance input 70 ohm and 200 ohm,
3.phase reverse switch,
4.-10 db pad
5. Five steps gain switch
6. We added also switchable Phantom power for modern microphones.
Plug and play set with power supply (we have two versions 240V and 110V), providing 24 and 48 V. Original Rare 13 pin tuchels wired to Xlr. Schematics for easy maintenance in future will be provided in JPG format. Overhauled and checked by a qualified technician.
If you are about to ask me to sell it for half of the price please check prices of currently produced "high end" stereo preamps and bear in mind that these units are something very different than that. Beside of it you are about to invest in a piece of history, one of first, solid state designs from the beginning of 60' in a great, useful shape.
