This is the history of the neck, from Geoff Gould of Modulus:

This is one of the earliest necks we made. NO, it's not from '71-'72. My first epiphany about doing something space age wasn't until a Grateful Dead concert in October of '74, and it wasn't until maybe '78-'79 that we started doing Fender replacement necks. I'll try and address some of the questions, one bullet point at a time:

  • The silver Alembic logo was a very short-lived thing we did. We bought them from Alembic, and paid a license fee to call these Modulus/Alembic. Alembic was our first customer. The name led to too much confusion, so we just started calling them Modulus Graphite BASSSTAR necks.
  • The graphite is a special random mat of ultra-stiff GY70 fibers.
  • The neck is yellow, because in the beginning, we used Sherwin-Williams Polane, like Alembic did. The feeling at the time was they must have changed the formula, as the finishes started to yellow significantly.
  • Larry Robinson, who is famous now as an inlay artist, inlaid the name in the peghead. Larry was a part-time employee at the time.

I have used this neck for gigs for the last 30 years, It's a great neck with some cool history. Made exclusively for & played by Jerry Scheff! One of a kind, for sure. This one has a real ebony fretboard, Schaller tuners & is solid as a rock! This is the neck with tuners & mounting screws only! No bass attached!
