Technically a new guitar, in that I made it from all new components, and all new ideas!
This video here is me but not this guitar; just doing one of my own songs a year or more ago.
I built this with no scratch-plate but a musicman control plate, and matched the bronze cavity shielding with the mahogany wood. Through dispensing with the scratch-plate I am able to separate the two halves of the pickup set, this reduces the interference between the two magnetic fields and gives a clearer stronger signal from each half of the pickup-set.
This neck is a precision bass size being a 42mm nut width, but I cut the nut grooves as for a jazz bass which is a 38mm nut; then I recarved the neck edges between each fret wire so you can feel your position at or between frets without looking as much. This scalloping of the edge also means that the neck feels slimmer in your hand, although the frets still extend to the same place as before. Some people like to use their thumb on the bass string and if you are one of those this will make playing that way even easier.
The chrome tuners are a nice quality Ibanez set from a new TR200 bass.
I fitted black volume and tone knobs to match the black musicman bridge, and generally I am quite happy with that look; if you think a Chrome bridge would look nicer in matching the chrome control plate there is one somewhere in the post to me now and so I can swap it round for you.
I used nice classy rounded strap buttons and posh white felt washers.
This is my first bass with scalloped neck edges and I felt at home on it straightaway; it feels very instinctive and more fluidly in touch and contact with the strings... and while thinking about its playability: I am struck even after only an initial rough set up, that it accepts a very low action string height for a bass and plays fast and easily.
More on it in the next day or so perhaps? Thanks, Mark D Phillips....... (Phillips Cleartone Special Guitar Conversions)
