It is a an experimental devices made to test out some ideas of mine, as well as an artistic project piece. It contains two oscillators, each have frequency controls, range switches and switchable light sensors so you can warp their frequencies by moving your hand over the sensor, kind of like a proximity control ie theremin. The two oscillators are sent into a type of ring modulator which combines the frequencies of the two oscillators creating complex sideband frequencies, some above and below human hearing. The output of the modulator circuit than goes into a special noise synthesizer circuit I've designed. It converts the modulated oscillator's signal in broadband noise that is weighted to the frequency of the oscillators. There is a toggle switch to switch the noise synthesizer on and off. Lastly, the signal is sent into a gate and a vca (voltage controlled amplifier) which can be controlled by an internal lfo (low frequency oscillator) or an external control voltage. You can get some cool percussive sounds, alomy like bells or cymbals when using the internal lfo to control the vca. There is also a gate input to allow you to cut the output signal in and out via an external trigger. This designed to work with eurorack modulator systems though results with vary w different systems. The is built into a plastic extraterrestrial looking pencil case so you'll need to handle it with some care.
This thing is very playable and pairs up amazingly with echo. Great for cosmic drones, hypnotic pulsations and bringing down unidentified flying objects to your back yard.
I posted a short video of the Greys Box in action on my insta page.
