Reluctantly letting go this Drum Solo snare built by Greg Gaylord, who, for several years now, is head of production at Craviotto.
This is a stave shell with 45º edges, 10 lugs, and original heads. The wood is a pretty dense and heavy drum. The specie is Banara wood and is from Central America. In addition to the type of wood, Greg wrote "prototype" on the shell. I couldn't find a whole lot of information about the wood, so I contacted Craviotto and got this response from Greg.
The Banara snare would have been one of only a few at the most. I don't recall how many were made. I may have done one for Pork Pie many years ago. Banara is a tropical wood and the material I used was all FSC certified, so it was environmentally "friendly". The snare you picked up was likely a 6 x 14 and if so, it was likely the drum used on my web site and in the DRUM! magazine article "wood of the month". I recall the wood being very "creamy" to work with and yellow-ish in color. Beyond that, my memory fades and I dont recall much else.
Indeed, the wood is yellow after he finished it. It also has a hard gloss finish on it. Mine seems to measure closer to 6.5", so not sure if it was the one pictured in the DRUM! article.
The snare has a great attack. I would describe it similar to Padouk or another of the very dense woods.
Only selling this drum as I just have too many and this one doesn't get the playing time it deserves. I'm pairing down to just a couple of Craviottos. I'll even ship with a close-to-new Ahead fleece-lined bag!
Please ask questions before purchase and shipping will only be to the lower 48. Thanks for looking.
