Here is a used Boss CS-3 Compression / Sustainer.  Made in Taiwan - Black Bottom Label (from 1989). But the bottom label came off and the lower left area torn apart from the main label.  The bottom label is included.  If necessary - I can re-glue the bottom label back on with adhesive spray. Let me know if you would like me to do this.

Comes with battery. Also:

***  I am including one new set of D'Addario EXL-110 light (gauge 10) electric guitar strings.  Please let me know if you prefer D'Addario EXL-120 light (gauge 9) strings instead of the gauge 10 strings ***

The selling price will be $5 less if you do not need the battery and strings. Please message me (or make an offer stating this) if you do NOT need these items.  Or message me and I can edit the listing (if you prefer that these details be edited in listing).

Sorry No Box and No Paperwork.

I put its condition as Good (using REVERB's Condition Criteria). But - in my opinion - it is in between Very Good and Good (a little better than GOOD). But your opinion might differ.

This pedal has been tested and it works fine.

All Original.  With the exception of the following:

  • 1)  As I stated in the beginning of the description - the bottom label came of the bottom plate and the lower left area tore apart from the main part of the label.  This was caused when velcro was taken off of the bottom side.
  • The battery clip was repaired (but there is a chance that part of it is not original). If you open the pedal (SEE Last TWO Pictures) - you can see  / will see the the red and black wires have heat shrink tubing on them.  I am not sure if it this year "version" of the CS3 pedal is suppose to have the gray colored end for the battery clip.  What is on this pedal is black.
  • The four screws for the bottom plate are BOSS screws but they might not be the original ones for this year / "version" of the CS3 pedal  (which I believe are supposed to have a slightly wider screw head).

This pedal has the sticker / label with the serial number in the battery compartment. It also says:  Product of Roland TAIWAN

Entered Serial: BA93402

Your pedal was made in Dec, 1989  (December 1989).

The pedal was used and it has the typical imperfections from use and age:  nicks , scratches, and other wear / imperfections.  But it still looks good for a pedal a little over 30 years old.

LEFT SIDE -- Several small and tiny nicks (some of these nicks has rust spots) and a few scratches.

RIGHT SIDE -- Several small & tiny nicks (some of these nicks has rust spots) a few scratches. And the lower center area has a big clear spot with hard residue (probably clear glue). For this spot - some areas have streaks and some areas this clear residue is thicker.

BACK SIDE --  Some small & tiny nicks (some of these nicks has rust spots) a few scratches.

Small Label Near The Power Jack has three deep dash-like scratches.

FRONT SIDE -- Some small & tiny nicks and a few very short scratches.

TOP SIDE -- The front left corner has a visible chip and a few very small nicks.   The edges have a coupe of very small and tiny nicks. The center area has some tiny & very small nicks and a few short scratches.

TOP BLACK PLATE (where the controls are) -- has a couple of tiny and very small nicks and a few short light scratches.

The pedal has all of the KNOBS. The tops of the knobs are fine.

The rubber on the top is generally fine. It has hardened a little bit from age. It has wear around the edges and on the BOSS logo.  And it has dust in between the letter & graphic of the Boss logo. The center area has a diagonal short light surface scratch.

HARDWARE (nuts and washers for the jacks) -- some nicks. The nut and washer on the right side (INPUT jack) has some visible rust. I will switch them to clean ones.

The black finish on the heads of the screws is mostly fine. Just light fading or a little dull..

RUBBER ON BOTTOM -- It has hardened a little form age. It was wear around the edges. It has surface scuffs on the outer areas. The area where the label goes on is clean. As I have stated a few times- the label is off of the pedal (but it is included).

BOTTOM LABEL - is NOT on the pedal. It has a tear. If necessary I can re-glue it back on.  LET ME KNOW if you would like me to do so.

The grommet (the small rubber piece that cushions the front screw hole) is fine for its age. Some wear - but still together.

The controls are: LEVEL, TONE, ATTACK, and SUSTAIN.

The jacks are: Input, Output, and Power

NOTE: The label near the adapter jack says, "USE BOSS ACA ADAPTER ONLY."

This does not mean that you are limited to only using a Boss ACA adaptor (which is 12 V with a negative center).

You can used a Boss PSA power supply such as PSA120S (or a Truetone / Visual Sound One Spot power supply or something similar). But:

Since this pedal was originally designed to be used with a Boss ACA power supply - usually when you use a "regular 9v negative tip power supply - the pedal works, but the light does not light up or it lights up faintly).   When I tested it out with a Truetone  9v negative tip 1700mA power supply  - it LIT UP DIM.

Therefore if you use this pedal with a 9v power supply - you just have to LISTEN (even thought the light is off - you will here the effect sound when the effect is on). And you will hear the by pass sound when the effect is off.

NOTE: When you use a battery -- the light lights up fine when the effect is on.

If a 12 volt negative tip power supply is used - then the light will light up.  According to Roland / Boss:  "Powering ACA pedals with a PSA power supply

Powering the older pedals designed for 12V DC input with either a newer ACA or PSA adapter will not work very well. The voltage drop over the resistor and diode will prevent the pedal from getting enough power and its LED will usually only glow faintly (or not al all). The solution is to use a daisy chain and plug in another pedal designed for the newer ACA or PSA adapter. The lead between the two pedals will short the resistor diode pair and the pedal will receive full power."

A few years ago there was a site  where I found the above info. Unfortunately this site is no long in existence [ now there is Boss Area 2.0 ]:

But -you can do a search for >> "Powering ACA pedals with a PSA power supply." which is what I recently did and I found the below link / article.

Here is an informative site:

It has an Article Titled:

I took pictures of all sides of the pedal and a few of areas of interest. The first pictures shows what it comes with.  Please message me if you only want to buy the pedal or if you would like to buy the pedal with certain items presented in this listing.

NOTE:   There may be some imperfections that I overlooked.   There are some imperfections that can be seen in person that do not appear in the pictures.  Also  - there are some imperfections (glares, reflections, dust specks) that show up in the pictures that are not that visible in person.

the following is information on this model pedal -

Keep control; make it last.

With the Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer you get smooth sustain, a more balanced string response, and more clarity and punch at any volume. A must for recording. Ideal alone for a clean sound or in front of a distortion or chorus.

CS-3 Compression Sustainer

The CS-3 replaced the CS-2 in 1986 and has since then been the only Boss pedal compressor available. This pedal will compress high input signals and boost low input signals to produce sustain. Boosting low-input signal means that noise will be boosted at the same time so it is easy to compress the signal too much and end up with a very noisy signal.

The CS-3 has been through a chip replacement at least once in its lifetime. Early pedals used a voltage controlled amplifier (VCA) DBX1252 but it was changed to a THAT2159 some time in the early 90s. The pedal was modified for the PSA adapter in 1997.
