NOTE: USA buyers please contact me before buying the item for a more accurate s/p cost. Since the s/p cost varies (depending on location) - I put a general cost of $120. SERIAL NUMBER: 92156353 (left to right - the first number and the fifth number date this year guitar) 1996.
MADE IN USA
The Hawk was a Gibson guitar made in the 1990's that was part of Gibson's "All America Series."
Most or all of the "All American Series" Gibson guitars have the USA flag on the lower center area of the back of the headstock and this info:
PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA
HANDCRAFTED IN
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE
The weight of this gutted guitar BODY and fretted NECK is about 5 pounds and 2 ounces.
Slim tapered (1960's) neck.
22 medium jumbo frets (I am very sure that they are medium jumbo- but they might be medium).
NOTE: It has a 25.5" scale length which will make "The Hawk" more twang-y than, say, an SG.
Another NOTE: some / many Fender model guitars have a 25.5 scale: Strat, Tele, Esquire, Jazzmaster. Therefore The Hawk - will have a Fender-ish feel and sound. You might consider putting in electronics for split coil pickups to really take advantage of this. Just an idea. P90 sized humbuckers on it would be kool too. Pickups & Electronics NOT Included
When this item was a complete guitar - it was played on so it has what I consider to be light average player's wear / imperfections. Plus is has aging - so in a way it has even more MOJO (visibly used but - in my opinion - not to abused).
NOTE: Some people light consider the wear to be average.
** Not all of the imperfections show up or accurately show up in the pictures. But they can be seen in person.
** Also there are several or a couple of glares, reflections, dust / lint speck that might look like imperfections - but they are not.
The following factors gives it MOJO (some info I just mentioned above):
-
it has a cool used and aged look
- the wood has aged
- it is not to heavy (and on the light side),
- it has a slightly smaller and slightly thinner body shape (compared to most LP body sized guitars),
- it has the slightly longer scale
This will definitely be a really nice player's guitar after you put the parts on it. It has MOJO. Plus it has that aged wood tone (about 24 years old). That is the kind of vibe that it has. It definitely has player's history - but not too extreme - therefore - you can put many more miles on it.
In a way -- it handles / feels (& plays - when it has parts on it) like a Gibson SG and a Fender Tele (or even a Fender Strat) combined together -- but in a Gibson HAWK body. Sorry if I am repeating myself.
I personally dig the slightly longer scale (25.5 inches) and you probably will too.
You might want to think about putting in humbucker sized p90s or putting in coil splitting electronics (if humbuckers are put it) (pickups NOT included).
The top is flat. It is NOT carved.
The body (mahogany) is a little thinner than a regular carved to LP (stating this for body thickness comparison). The body on this guitar is it is just about 1 and 5/8 inches thick.
In case you are not familiar to nitro celullose finish(es). This kind of finish is very delicate (yes it is hard / yet it is also soft). It dings up easily, the finish on instruments that get play on a lot or get handled often - tend to gets cloudy / dull areas. Sometime it negatively interacts with some material - the material it touch against a lot eats into the finish. Never put sticker or paint on this kind of finish - a sticker and paint will eat into the finish / damage the finish. Nitro finishes needs to be buffed with care and slowly - do not overheat or it will melt, etc. I am explaining this because a few areas on this item have imperfections in the finish.
Personally I would leave any imperfection in the finish that have unevenness or that are a little blotchy alone -- unless you know what you are doing and have the proper tools and things to smooth out the finish or have a guitar tech check it out of you are considering touching up these area..Here are very detailed descriptions for each area / each part --
FRONT SIDE OF BODY:
- There are several pen pint size, marked point size, & tiny dings / impression here and there. Most are visible but not too deep.
-
The finish all over has very light swirly scratches (just the natures of the nitro finish - when it has been wiped, clean or touched often).
- There are a couple of light cloudy line surface scratches here & there. Again - just the nature of the nitro finish.
- The finish around the hole for the TONE control has some wear / discoloration and a circular impression. No worries because the hardware and the knob for this control will cover this area. These parts are NOT included.
-
The finish around the hole for the VOLUME control and for the switch each have light wear and a circular impression.
No worries because the hardware, the knob for this control, and the switch washer will cover these areas. These parts are NOT included.
- The upper right area has a not to big / not to small blotchy spot in the finish.. And the lower right area has a few blotchy and a few cloudy spots in the finish.
FRONT EDGES of BODY:
- Overall - there are some very small, very, small, and tiny dings (some are nicks and some are chips) all around. Some areas are cleaner than other areas.
- The mid to upper lower right area (near the jack) as a couple of tiny / very small nicks and and a few tiny & very small chips in the finish. There are also a few tiny white markings.
- The bottom edge has a couple of tiny and very small nicks There are also a few tiny white surface markings.
** The edges and corners of the upper right "horn" has some small nicks and small chips. Some of them expose small area of wood.
** NOTE: This model guitar is NOT designed to have a pickguard.
BACK SIDE OF BODY:
- Not too serious buckle rash. Meaning nothing really deep. The mid to upper areas have some light & very light scratches a couple of light line impressions. Please do not try to buff out the surface scratches with a wheel or drill type of buffer). This is because with the nitro gloss finish - you will only create swirly surface scratches, And if not properly done and if you over heat nitro-cellulose -- it will get gummy and blotchy. Also some cleaning and buffing products will have negative effect on nitro-cellulose finishes.
- Lower areas (all the way across) have white line marking - most are very short and some are a little longer. It is recommended that you have a guitar tech look at this item - that is if (or especially if) you are planning to clean off these white markings. Refer to the information above about handling nitro-cellulose finishes. If improperly done - you can do more harm to the finish than good.
- There are a couple of light cloudy lines here & these
- There are a some tiny light dings here & there. There are not too may visible dings on the back side compared to the front side.
- It also has some very light swirly surface scratches.
BACK EDGES of BODY (when look at if from the back side):
- The upper left ares (where the "horn" is) has a small visible chip in the finish exposing wood. It could be filled in. If you are planning to touch up this area (or other areas) - I would have a guitar check it out because some product eat way at nitro-cellulose finishes.
- The bottom edge has a couple of small, very small, and tiny dings/ impressions. It has has a coupe of very short white markings.
- The lower right area has a small round-ish / oval-ish shaped not too light / not too deep impression.
- The other edge areas have a few very small & tiny dings / impressions here and there.
BODY SIDES (when looking at it from the front side):
- Some area are very clean and some areas have a few or a couple of imperfections).
- The mid left ares has a small white marking (near the front edge).
- The lower left area has a few very small dings, a few very small white markings, and a few tiny chips in the finish (most of these imperfections are near the top edge). It has a has a few light surface scratches.
- The bottom area has a few tiny light dings and a few very light surface scratches.
- The bottom area to the right of the strap button (specifically -- mid right ares near the front edge) has about two not too / not too small blotch / cloudy oval shaped imperfections in the finish. They are kind of closely grouped together - so they blend together (but tone goes vertically and one goes horizontally.
- The lower right area (below the jack) has two not to big / not too small light cloudy / hazy surface spots in the finish. There are also a few tiny light nicks and a few very light surface scratches.
- The mid right area to the upper lower area (above the jack) has a couple of very light surface scratches, a few not too big / not too small cloudy / blotchy spots in the finish, and a few tiny nicks.
HEADSTOCK FRONT:
- The upper left area (near the top left corner) has about two small white markings.
- The finish on the far left side has a couple of visible vertical cracks / checking (some are long & some are medium length and some are deeper than others).
- The finish on the right side has several visible vertical cracks / checking (some are long & some are medium length and some are deeper than others).
- The finish all over has very light swirly scratches (just the natures of the nitro finish - when it has been wiped, clean or touched often).
Front Edges & Corners of Headstock:
- Most areas of the edges are very clean.
- The top corners have a few tiny and very small nicks (some people might call them chips).
HEADSTOCK BACK:
- Overall look fine.
- If you closely look at it - you can see that the nitro finish has some extremely light swirly surface scratches (just the natures of the nitro finish - when it has been wiped, clean or touched often). Some of these scratches show up more in the pictures than they appear in person.
- The lower left area (about opposite where the nut is) has a few tiny dings / nicks.
- You can see the outline where the tuners used to be, A few areas has tiny nick has exposing wood. No worries because the tuners will cover this up. Tuners NOT Included.
- Please be aware that the holes for the tuners have bushings in them. They are in tight. It is recommend that you get the type of tuner that will properly fit (they are similar to the Gibson Historic type of tuner - Kluson makes them too). Pleas message me if you have any question about what kind of tuners to put on this piece. If you do plan to put on the standard Gibson tuners - have a guitar tech take off the bushings to avoid chipping the finish on the headstock. Also might need to enlarge the holes for the tuners (to fit the threaded nut). The last picture show the tuner that was originally on this item. The tuner(s) is / are NOT included (it is only shown for example).
Back Edges and Corners of (when looking at it from the BACK Side):
- Most areas are fine.
- The lower center area of the right edge has a small nick (across from the A tuner hole). This nick is more on the side than on the edge.
- The top edge has a few tiny and few small nicks.
- NOTE: the white spots on left area of the top edge (seen on pictures # 15 ) are glares. I will take a better pictures as son as I can.
HEADSTOCK SIDES
(when looking at it from the FRONT Side):
:
- The right side is fine.
- The left side is mostly fine - it just has a very small nick across A tuner hole.
- The lower left area (where it scallops) above the nut - very visible round chip in the finish exposing wood ( this chip is has a kind of big for this area). This area also has a couple of dark spots of residue that I left on (if I wipe off this residue - I will add an updated picture).
- The lower right area (where it scallops) has a not too big / not too small blotchy spot in the finish. Feel free to ask for a picture of this area. If I have a chance - I will I will add a picture of this area.
- The top side has a couple of nicks. The corners and areas near the corners has a few s very mall chips. (they show up more in the pictures than they appear in person). And the center back area has a few small white markings.
- Overall it is clean (not 100% perfect). It just has a few small & very small dings / impressions. I will point out the more visible ones:
- Behind the first fret area - a not too big / too small round shaped impression (about 1/4 of an inch in diameter). about 1/8 of an inch deep.
- Behind the area in between the 2nd and 3rd fret - about two short not to light / not too deep oval shaped impressions.
- And if you really examine the back of the neck - you can see a dew extremely light very short dash-line impressions.
- A few areas of the nitro finish have extremely light swirly surface scratches (just the natures of the nitro finish - when it has been wiped, clean or touched often). A few area look cloudy in the pictures - but do not look cloudy in the pictures - these cloudy areas are mostly just fingerprints that I did not wipe off before taking the pictures.
** FRETBOARD: Very clean. It was recently cleaned and conditioned.
** FRETS are clean for the age of this gutted guitar body & neck). (not 100% perfect- but nothing too extreme and nothing very serious) They were recently cleaned, polished. It look like this guitar was getting get set-ups because the fret edges are smooth and the frets have been maintained.
** The fret do not have any very deep grooves. they have plenty of life them. A couple of areas have light grooves. Nothing that affects play-ability or that crates fret buzz, etc. Also if you closely examine the frets - you can see a a couple of very light markings / scratches here & there. The frets are either medium or medium jumbo (I have to look into this). SEE pictures. Or ask for close up pictures.
** The nut is fine - it just has some discoloration from aging and also in the grooves.
** The truss rod works as it should.
** The truss rod cover is the original one. The white border and the has visible aging / yellowing. The main black areas have some very light surface scratches and may be a few very tiny surface nicks. The white "The Hawk" imprint is still mostly white - but it has minor aging. The screws for the TRC have some wear and some discoloration (but they can still be screwed on and off).
** The pickup mounting rings & screws are included. I put creme rings in with silver screws (they are new - so they are very clean). But this item used to have (originally had) black rings with black screws. I do not mind changing the rings and screws back to black (will probably not be the original ones). Just let me know.
** The jack plate is the matching color creme as the pup mounting rings. The screws are silver The jack plate and screws are very clean is very clean. This gutted guitar body & neck used to have (originally had) a chrome jack plate. I no longer have the original jack plate. But I do not mind switching the creme jack plate to either chrome or black. Just let me know.
** The control cavity back plate is the original one. It is black. It has some light scratches and a couple of tiny light nicks. I put cleaner screws on because the original ones were a little rusty.
** The strap buttons & screws are new Gibson aluminum ones. I also put black felt (soft) washers on.
** Please message me about details for the control harness that is included (SEE picture # 20). Work fine.
I took several pictures of this item.
Feel free to ask for more pictures of this item. Feel free to ask questions.
NOTE: There are some imperfections that can be seen in person that do not appear in the pictures. There may be some imperfections that I overlooked. And - there maybe some imperfections show up in the pictures that are not that visible in person (such as: glares, reflections, dust specks).
