Coles STC Ball and Biscuit 4021 Omni Microphone
~This item has abnormally low output and is sold as-is. 20 ohm. ~
This is a "Standard Cables and Cables Limited" (STC who would later become Coles) 4021 "Apple and Biscuit" (otherwise known as “Ball and Biscuit”) omni-directional Microphone.
The 4021 is a classic mic, used by the BBC and film companies from the 30's to the late 60's, and has all the warmth of a mic of its vintage. Great on acoustic guitars, electrics, voice and incredible as a room mic (especially for drums) it was used for the classic room sound on "in the air tonight" by Phil Collins.
Cenzo Townshend has vouched for the STC 4021 - quote: “I have some STC 4021 Ball and Biscuit microphones; I use them as room mics or overheads — or in a dustbin — anywhere! You can EQ them to such an extent without the sound getting horrible. I sometimes split the mic over three channels and EQ for bass, mid and top, and then compress them. For vocals it’s amazing, Bernard from New Order sung with it and I’ve also used it on Graham Coxon’s vocals.”
Liam From ToeRag Studios also used the STC 4021 to record The White Stripes, among others, with Jack White naming a song “Ball and Biscuit" (and not after its original moniker: “Apple and Biscuit”) after this mic.
