1970's Stephens Electronics 811D 16 Track w/8 track heads Studer Ampex

Rare, one of a kind, fully restored 1970's Stephens 811D 2" 16 track with a rare Sound and Vision Autolocator, 1" 8 track heads in like new condition, a spare power supply and many spare transport parts/opamps. Also included is several boxes of original Stephens Electronics schematics, manuals, sales literature, and other rare documents. 

The Stephens Electronics 811D is arguably the best sounding 2" 16 track machine ever made. There were less than 200 Stephens machines made, and the 811D is the best sounding of the Stephens machines due to the non-FET switching and simple audio circuit. This machine has been completely recapped, the transport has been adjusted and everything works as it should. All the I/O is wired to 4 DB25 connectors. 

The included spare 2" 16 track has a complete set of audio electronics, two good motors, and is complete minus a case and a few cosmetic parts.

The custom hardwood cherry case was recently built by Apple Valley Woodworking here in Ashfield, MA based on another Stephens Electronics 811D I owned several years ago. I've owned many Stephens Electronics machines (and a Stephens Electronics console) over the years and this 16 track is a rare find with all the included spare parts and schematics - I'm certain this is the only time any lot like this will ever be available. A new Stephens Electronics 811D 16 track was over $30K in the 1970's - which would be $173,000 today if adjusted for inflation. So please, serious inquiries only - this machine deserves a good home. Combined with the 16 track Langevin/ADM console I have listed separately you could have the ultimate portable 2" 16 track recording studio.

Although this machine can be shipped freight I would recommend picking it up in person or using a special fine art courier with a truck featuring air-ride suspension to ensure safe transit. Due to the fragile nature of vintage tape machines I can not offer a warranty on the machine or take responsibility for any damage during transit.
