Appraisal made on 5/17/99 by Mack Bettis of Tulsa Violin Exchange
Per appraisal: This violin bears the label "J Grandjon" "Paris". It is very typical tonthat Mirecourt School of excellent violin makers, including this Grandjon family member, as well as the more prolific and typical Colin Mezin School of makers. The violin top is of a wide medium grade in the center, widening toward the outer flanks, an excellent quality of straight forward spruce. The back is a spectacular one piece even narrow curl, descending slightly to the right. The varnish is also the typical Mirecourt Red color in a good oil varnish, applied as the master maker's of that school. The ribs have a slightly wider curl, however the scroll matches the back. The oversold condition is excellent with no cracks or repairs except the smallest Nick's and 2 very short scratches on the lower outer top flanks. The violin is a truly fine master-made violin of the late 19th century, to the turn of the 20th century. Length 14 1/8. Width u.b. 6 1/8 width mb 4 1/2 and width lb 8 1/4
The case was also appraised as a Lipton Case of heavy, high quality Havana cowhide, is a fine quality of materials, difficult if not impossible to find. The case is almost entirely handmade craftsmanship, a very protective plywood shell, dark brown leather finish, with no Mars, cuts or damage, except small scuffs at the end. The interior is French fitted style, zippered violin protector, and is burgundy cut silk fabric. Has case cover. Case had $1,200 to $1500 replacement value.
No violin bow included.
