The steel guitar was invented in the 1890s in the kingdom of Hawaii. One of its first versions was the flat bar. The early Hawaiian masters used them (see last photo of King Bennie Nawahi).
Flat bars gave one pinpoint control: light in weight - this one is about 3 ounces - but with a good rounded surface for smooth sliding. Great for slants too.
