About This Listing

Have you been looking for the thin metal plates Gibson used to mount Mini-humbuckers and Soapbar P-90s in their guitars in the late 60s and later?

We have had a similar plate made for us:
These plates mount in the bottom of a standard P 90 or mini humbucker route with a couple wood screws. The plates are drilled with four holes threaded to accept #4-40 machine screws so a P-90 or Mini humbucker can be mounted.

We include two custom stainless steel 1 and 3/8" long #4-40 machine screws with small oval heads and chamfered tips that will work nicely for P-90s. If you need round head screws for mini-humbuckers, let us know.
The 4-40 holes are of a thread and depth that it will also accept metric 2.5mm screws and Gibson's standard #3-48 humbucker mounting screws. They'll work, but are slightly wobbly, but sometimes would be needed due to pickup construction or slight differences in part specs and mounting geometry.  Certain installations may require shorter screws, which we can provide upon request, or you can cut the existing screws down.

In some cases the plate may need to be mounted with standoffs to get the pickup height right or to keep the mounting screw from digging into wiring. You will also need to drill out under the plate to allow for the height adjustment screws to go below the plate.

The plate dimensions are 3.25" by .5" by .070" thick. The tolerances aren't tight on the length, the one measured in hand was 1.328" long. They'll fit in any route made for a P-90 soapbar pickup.
The soapbar mounting holes are .745" apart, which is just a fraction under 3/4".  This helps keep the pickup snug.
The two body mounting screwholes are 2 inches apart.
The outer mini-humbucker mounting holes are 2 15/16" apart.
In some situations the #3-48 screws may work better depending on the pickup and final distance between the mounting plate and pickup.

The four tapped 4-40 holes are the standard Gibson width and will mount a variety of pickups. Shown for demonstration in the photos is a budget soapbar and an old Bill Lawrence L-550. Have a look at the closeups of our custom screws.
