1958 Kay Violin Corner M-1, #40350 registered on the Kay Website.
This bass has been completely rebuilt and restored. The top was taken off and reinforced with a center patch ca. 10”x12”. This process strengthens the top to handle the tension of steel strings and also focuses the midrange of the instrument so that it doesn't have that objectionable tubby sound associated with vintage Kays.
It has a new thick Ebony fingerboard that adds stiffness to the neck increasing sustain and clarity of the fundamental.
It has a new bridge with adjusters.
It has a repaired broken heel with laminated maple slats to fill it out.
The neck has been reset with a 1.5 inch overstand allowing easy access to the upper register and increasing the amount of energy going into the instrument.
The setup includes a new nut, new Endpin, and new kevlar end pin cable. The tailpiece is original.
I stripped the lacquer and french polished the entire bass.
It is setup for professional level arco and pizz playing. This bass is not for the folks that are wedded to the all original “vintage” Kay aesthetic. This instrument has been maximized for advanced performance situations. It would be a great 2nd instrument for a professional or a serious step-up bass for an advanced student. Because of all the work, it sounds like a very good Juzek carved bass and plays easily and clearly, arco or pizzicato.
It is set up with D'Addario Zyex strings. It is available to try in New York City.
