The mid-60s were a time of transition for Fender, under the direction of CBS. Manufacturing methods were revised, and new materials were used, resulting in interesting twists on old favorites.
This an excellent example of a 1965 Strat could have been found in a time capsule—the only change from “stock” is the original gray-bottom bobbin single-coil neck pickup has been rewound.
The middle and bridge pickups are untouched, displaying an assembly date of 4-12-65, matching the all-original CTS pots dated to the 14th week of 1965. 1 5/8”-wide at the nut, the maple neck hosts a rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot markers and the original, vintage-style frets.
You simply will not find a cooler example of Fender craftsmanship from the ‘60s. More photos upon request.
OVERVIEW
1965 Stratocaster in Lake Placid Blue, Serial number L74594. Considered the "transition era" for the Strat, the "L" serial number generally indicates "Pre-CBS". A significant departure from the original early 50's Strats, the 65 has some striking features that exemplify the end of the Leo Fender era an illustrate the evolution of the Strat from its early counterpart. The Lake Placid Blue Finish which was standard in the '60s exemplifies the era and a time when the Strat was about to become as big as the Rock Stars who played it.
NOTES
Excellent condition. Some wear and finish cracking around the neck pocket. Beautiful checking surrounding the body. This guitar is killer. Feels awesome.
