The DPA 4003 Omnidirectional High Voltage Condenser Microphone. Highly regarded by engineers for its high sensitivity, low noise-floor and very high SPL capability. The DPA 4003 is an omnidirectional high-voltage (130 V) condenser microphone with extremely linear frequency response and extended low frequency handling capability (-2 dB at 10 Hz). The high sensitivity and the low noise-floor of the 4003 makes the microphone the perfect choice for all professional recordings. The Type 4003 is acoustically identical with the studio standard Type 4006, but differs in the powering system. The hi-voltage system enables the 4003 to handle app. 10 dB higher SPL than the 4006. The impressive dynamic range of the 4003, together with the wide range of acoustic pressure equalizers and protection grids puts the 4003 in the top league of studio quality microphones. Omnidirectional (pressure) microphone using a 16mm diameter prepolarized condenser cartridge. The diaphragm is a nickelfoil which has been coated with an ultra-thin polymer layer for optimumcorrosion resistance. The microphone housing is of German silver, an alloywith a high content of nickel to match the stable thermal qualities of thediaphragm. The cartridge has low self noise (typical 15dB(A) re. 20µPa) andhigh sensitivity (4003: 45mV/Pa and 4006: 10mV/Pa). For optimum stabilitythe microphone cartridges have undergone a special pre-aging process whichreleases all tensions in the materials and stabilizes the polarization voltage.

The 4003 is powered with 130V via the HMA4000 High-Voltage Microphone Amplifier and has a modified 4-pin XLR-connector (seeFig. 1 for pin designation). This special powering system enables the micro-phone preamplifier to handle approximately 10dB higher SPL than similarmicrophone types powered through conventional P48 systems (4003: 154dBSPL peak and 4006: 143dB SPL peak). Furthermore the 4003 together with theHMA4000 is a totally transformerless system and therefore has an extendedlow-frequency handling capability (10Hz to 20kHz ± 2dB).
