About This Listing

KAPA

“Continental”

GUITAR & BASS

MATCHED SET

1968

Made in the USA.

SOLD AS SET.

From my personal collection of Vintage KAPA Guitars, I am selling this matched set.

A Model CO-VI Guitar and Model CO-IV-1 Bass Guitar.

Both have the Kapa “Thunderbird Blue” finish.

A.       The Guitar.

KAPA

“The Continental”

Model CO-VI-2 (“2” designates that it has 2 pickups)

1968

“Thunderbird Blue”

CONDITION: Poor cosmetic condition aka “Perfect Relic”. Beautiful worn condition with faded finish. It is mechanically and electronically perfect.

Not OHSC.

Absolutely one of the coolest guitars I own. I have long been a fan of 1960’s MADE IN THE USA guitars that have connections to cars. For this one, it is the color, “Thunderbird Blue”.

BUT, the real beauty of this guitar is THE FRETBOARD. Look at it. It is absolutely STUNNING and incredibly RARE. The “Wave” is an all-natural piece of Brazilian ROSEWOOD with three distinct colors dramatically going from blond to rose with a black streak separating them. I think this is the first time I have owned a guitar where the fretboard wood was the most valuable part of it.

The “CONTINENTAL” certainly looked a whole lot like a Fender with its “Jaguar” and “Stratocaster” body shapes and Fender shaped headstocks. And it is extremely well made and playable.

From the ads for this guitar: “This instrument has a carefully designed body for perfect balance. Made of selected hardwoods in beautiful hand rubbed finishes. Ultra-thin neck with built in truss rod. Extremely responsive high output pickups.”

For this guitar, the pickups were made by KAPA in their factory and were copies of the Hofner “Franz Pix” pickups used on early Kapa guitars. These, to me, sound brighter than the “Pix” pickups. The tremolo system and bridge were made in Japan. Tuners are Schaller. Neck was made by Hofner.

B.       The Bass Guitar.

KAPA

“The Continental”

Model CO-IV-1 (has one pickup)

1968

“Thunderbird Blue”

CONDITION: Poor cosmetic condition aka “Perfect Relic”. Beautiful worn condition with faded finish. It is mechanically and electronically perfect.

Not OHSC.

A great playing bass that has great sound coming from its single Hofner “Pix” bass pickup. Sound is the familiar “Hofner thump” that is flattened out by the thin slap body. Maybe moves the sound up a few steps from the usual Hofner sound. But it is incredibly cool sounding. Neck by Hofner and is thin. Tuners are VAN GHENT and are absolutely dazzling. Check out photos. Rosewood fretboard. The tailpiece, bridge, and tailpiece cover were made in Japan maybe. Can’t tell for sure but what a cool tailpiece cover.

KAPA GUITAR COMPANY

ABOUT KAPA Guitars

1. KAPA Guitars was founded in 1963 by a Dutch immigrant named Koob Veneman.

2. Mr. Veneman was the owner of Veneman's Music Emporium, a musical instrument store in Silver Spring Maryland.

3. During the early 1960’s Veneman made the decision to build his own unique line of guitars. This was the years of the British Invasion and the Guitar Boom and Mr. Veneman wanted his piece of the pie.

4. Many of the guitars in stock at the Veneman store consisted of guitars that were imported from Germany and Italy.

5. The connections with these companies provided him with an excellent opportunity to purchase supplies from overseas manufacturers. His plan was to order guitar parts from European suppliers, assemble them in Edmonston Maryland where the guitars bodies were created.

6. KAPA guitars were at a plant on 46th Avenue in the town of Edmonston, Maryland.

7. The necks, pickups and electronics originally came from German manufacturer Hofner.

8. The pickups used on this Kapa guitar were Kapa made “staple” pickups by Kapa.

9. Also the bridge and tailpiece for the bass and the bridge and tremolo system for the guitar were made in Japan.

10. The guitars generally were equipped with two slider switches to control on/off function of the pickups, which is typical of Hofner's design of the 1960’s.

11. The tuners were made by Schaller for the guitar and Van Ghent for the bass.

12. Veneman named the company after himself, wife and children by using an anagram of their first names. Of course his name is Koob, his son’s name, Albert, his daughters name, Patricia and his wife’s name Adeline. Later Koob’s brother joined the family business.

13. KAPA necks are ultra-thin, which is sort of a ’60 thing. Guitarists wanted to play fast and for some odd reason, manufacturers equated this with skinny necks instead of low action.

14. The bodies also were thin in comparison to Fender and Gibson bodies.

15. KAPA went out of business in 1970 and its assets were sold to MICROFRETS and MOSRITE. It is a small world.

TRY IT OUT POLICY.

Understanding the normal hesitation of buying a guitar without first playing it, I want to make sure these guitars make you happy. To accomplish that, I want you to try them for 72 hours (three days). Play them, hold them, walk around with them on your back, sleep with then-whatever it takes for you to make sure these are the ones for you. During that time, you can return them for a full refund of your payment price (but of course they need to be treated well while you have them, as I expect you will) less shipping cost and you must pay the cost to ship it back to us.

If one arrives damaged, please let me know immediately by email. Be sure to hold onto all packing material and the box. I will contact the shipper for an inspection. Remember that this can take up to a couple of weeks but I will rush it along.

Minor problems. If there is a problem with one of the guitars when it arrives, e.g., loose wires etc. then I will work with you to get it repaired by someone in your area.
