This is a very well made 1920's tenor banjo with the name Slingerland stamped on the dowel. The serial number is 2031. The banjo is a high quality instrument in excellent playable condition. Most of its hardware is original and in very good condition.
The grained ivoroid knob double-banded geared tuners are of the highest quality (the value of these tuners alone is over $100). The 17-fret ebony fingerboard has pearl diamond inlays and the ebony veneered peghead has fancy abalone inlay. The scale length (from nut to bridge) is 21 1/8” and the fingerboard measurement at the bone nut is 1 1/8”. The figured maple neck has a thick ebony center lamination and heel is veneered with ebony. The donut-style tone ring is nickel-plated brass and clad to the rim. The maple rim is 10 3/4 inch, almost 3/4” thick, and 2 5/8” high. It has a birdeye pattern and is capped with an exotic wood. There are 20 original brackets with nice L-shaped shoes with hex head screws, flat hooks with 5/8" rounded nuts. The banjo has a newer Renaissance-style mylar head . There's a new "waverly-style" adjustable tailpiece. The maple bridge has bone inset into ebony.
This Slingerland is strung with heavy weight strings for tuning in GDAE. It has excellent action and a nice mellow sound due to the donut-style tone ring. The banjo’s short scale length combined and with its string setup and action makes this banjo ideal for playing Irish music. It comes with an original vintage case in good condition.
