About This Listing

The shells for these snares are made from the scraps of wood left over from all of the drums I made during the course of the calendar year, that's why I'm calling them the Recycle Series.

The way I make shells tends to yield small and unusually shaped pieces of wood that aren't super useful, but are too big for my inner-wood-hoarder to get rid of. As the year progresses my scrap shelf slowly fills with these interesting but less-than useful remnants.

At some point, in the name of maintaining a somewhat orderly shop, I decided to make use of these scraps in one project- rather than letting my neighbor use them as kindling in his outdoor fire pit like I had done in the past. I thought there would be no more fitting an application for these pieces of lumber than to be made into drums, a bit of a redemption if you will. They didn't quite make it into whatever shell they were discarded from, but now they get a chance to shine.

I couldn't be happier with the resulting shells. They are visually impactful, but more importantly they tell the story of HHG Drums during the course of the year. Every piece of wood is a reflection on a client, an instrument, and the labor I spent building it. It's really cool to look at these shells and reflect on all of these projects, and it feels good to know that I saved all of this wonderful lumber from the burn pile!

-Sam Thurau lead craftsman at HHG

DETAILS:

We only make a few of these drums yearly. No two drums are the same. Each drum features a number of different species, with an average of 7 to 8 different species in each drum. The wood species vary from domestics, to extremely hard to find Exotics. Ash, cherry, walnut, Poplar, Oak, maple, ebony, Bubinga, Purple Heart, Sycamore, Paduak, mahogany, shedua, lacewood- just to name a few.

We have the shells all glued up and ready to hit the lathe, when you make your order, we will be building your drum from scratch. We can put whatever hardware you would like on the drum, we've been favoring the HHG single point lugs in chrome with claws and no flange hoops as pictured in the listing. But we also did one with triple flange black nickel hoops and oil rubbed bronze single point lugs. After you purchase the drum, feel free to shoot us a message and let us know what you would like for hardware.

These drums feature a choice of 20, 24, 30 or 42 strand snare wires, Evans heads, an internal tone control mechanism, and a satin lacquer finish. But if you would like to change some of these options, feel free to include that in your message.

These are some of the coolest drums that we have made to date, we're very excited to be building some instruments that are a small part of our history. We hope that you'll consider adding one to your collection!

As with all of our drums and listings shown, when you place an order with HHG Drums, your new instrument will be hand-crafted in house, from scratch. The drum shown in the pictures was built for a customer, and now resides with them.
