About This Listing

c. 1968-1969 Gibson J-200 signed by Pete Townshend

Here today for your consideration is a gorgeous 1968/69 Gibson J-200 with an interesting side story, sprinkled with a touch of mystery.

First off the guitar itself, a Jumbo flattop J-200. Undoubtedly one of Gibson's most iconic, recognized acoustic guitars, and often referred to as "The King of Flattops". Enormous in both size and tone, the J-200 is most noticeable due to its various unique aesthetics, like a mustache bridge or pineapple shaped inlays. This one in particular has beautiful amount of finish checking and play wear in all the right and expected areas. It feels like a part of you, it feels like you and the guiatr are the oldest of friends and have been playing together for decades. It's no wonder players like Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Page, George Harrison, Bruce Springsteen, The Edge, Elvis, Neil Young and countless others have used this beauties to write and perform some of the most memorable songs ever. One player in particular that utilized the J-200 to create rock and roll history with the album Tommy was Pete Townshend. And that brings us to the second bit about this guitar...

We've all heard the mythical stories of some lucky son'bitch buying a storage locker and finding an priceless painting or lost masterpiece. Well that's where this guitar came from, a purchased storage locker, location unknown.
Of course discovering something like this your imagination runs wild with possibilities, hope and dreams, fantasies and what not but lets stick to the facts. This guitar did not belong to Pete, nor do we believe he ever played it. What we do know is it was 100% signed by him, and according to Pete's foggy memory he felt this had belonged to one of the guitarists in the US or Canadian Tommy  bands in 1994. Nicola Joss, Pete's assistant is the one who helped clarify and separate fact from fiction. Nicola showed Pete and Alan Rogan(Pete's tech) the guitar and Alan was certain the guitar never belonged to Pete because Alan had never seen it before. And sometimes the tech know the gear better than the artist, lets be honest. We have the email correspondence with the guitar, which you will receive.

So what do we have what do we know? We have an original 1968/69 Gibson J-200 with the realest of real play wear and relicing, done by age and play not pay. There are about 6 patched holes along the side of the guitar; one on either side of the neck joint, then another two further down the bottom, and another two further down from that. These may have been from experimenting with electronics in the guitar which Pete was known to do and talked about doing. Another reason at first it was believed this could have been one of Pete's former guitars. A strap button was once installed on the bottom side of the neck heel but is now moved to the cap. The inlays are in pretty pristine condition except for one dot inlay on the mustache bridge which has mostly broken out. It has an EMG acoustic pickup system installed. It is the same year, model, and finish as the J-200 Pete Townshend bought in 1968 at Manny's Music in New York while working on the songs that would become Tommy. Pete used the guitar on virtually everything begining in 1968 until 1989's Iron Man. That guitar is now residing at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame after a very hard rock n roll life. Pete signed it, confirmed by his Personal Assistant Nicola Joss. Pete himself feels it belonged to one of the guitarists in either the US or Canadian Tommy bands from 1994 do to the carefully made signature. Pete would rarely sign old guitars that belong to other people, so this had to have been owned by a friend or someone close to him.

So there you have it. Straight facts. No fluff. An amazing example of one of the best acoustic guitars ever made with an extra bit of excitement and story to go along with it.

Non Original GUILD  hardshell case included.
